A Real Beast! 1984 Ford F-150 XLT 4X4

I’ve got to give a really big thumbs-up to the seller of this 1984 Ford F-150 XLT 4X4 for attention to detail, as he has included one of the most comprehensive lists I have ever encountered of parts that have been added or replaced on this truck under his watch, with each piece followed by how much it cost.  And we’re not talking rough estimates, but itemization in exact dollars and cents!  The total adds up to $14,221.98, and that’s not including his labor or all of the items he forgot to mention, so if you look at the value of this truck based on the sum of its parts and time invested the seller’s asking price of $17,999.99 seems like a potential bargain.  There’s also an option to submit an offer, so if your interest has been piqued, the truck is located in South Bend, Indiana, and can be found here on eBay.

The owner says he began the build during the summer of 2001, and obviously, his focus was mostly on the drivetrain, which has already had a whole lot of the heavy lifting completed.  It’s kind of a beast too, but more on that in a moment.  What hasn’t received much attention yet is the body, which is going to need some work unless you’re envying the patina as it is now.  The seller mentions that the bed is basically trashed, with lots of dents and rust.  But never fear, he’s got you covered, as a much better-condition replacement bed from a 1986 model truck is also included in the sale.

Under the hood is where the truck’s true beauty lies, as it is now equipped with a 1974 block 351 Windsor that’s been bored .40 over, and when the seller says this was a no-expense-spared build he really means it!  When you scroll down to the bottom of his listing, a detailed record of the parts used appears, at least all the ones he remembered, and it’s several levels past impressive plus way too much to get into here.  Another cool feature is the transmission, as the factory C6 automatic has been ditched in favor of a Borg Warner T18 4-Speed manual.  Both front and back gears are 4.56, and I can almost imagine what this short bed must sound like going through the gears with the glass packs.  It’s pretty impressive down below as well, with that transfer case sort of stealing the show in the looks department from the underside.

Much like the exterior, the original interior hasn’t gotten a lot of attention either.  Things inside are said to be faded and cracking, and among the things it needs are a new dash pad, new door panels, and new carpeting, although a redone headliner and new sun visors will be thrown in.  The floor pan on the passenger side is also said to be a bit soft and could use replacing, but with the overkill mechanical head-start that’s already in place, this one seems like a great truck for somebody whose specialty is body skills, or a driver who doesn’t care about the looks and just wants to have fun taking off quickly.  What would your next move be if this was your Ford F-150 XLT 4X4?

    I love workhorse trucks like this with no pretenses. There’s no photo of the bed so not sure how bad it is, but if it wd not haul hay as is, first move for me wd be replace the bed. Then I wd clean up the interior to within an inch of its life, and call it good.

    The 351w or the Cleveland are two of my favorite motors – they ARE beasts. Love this build.

    Value of this truck in very good stock condition is around $4k.
    You typically don’t get even half out of what you put into mod’s in resale value, regardless of your stack of receipts.
    It’s neither collectible, rare, especially high performance, nor unique and it needs a ton of cosmetic help($$).
    A realistic starting place for this truck is $9k and $7-8k would be a more than fair offer.
