Affordable Driver: 1986 Pontiac Trans Am

Cars from the 1980s have developed a strong following in the classic market for a simple reason: They are generally affordable options for those seeking the first classic to park in their garage. A fresh generation of enthusiasts has discovered these vehicles, and many view them as a stepping stone to potentially bigger and better things. That isn’t to say they are lesser vehicles than their more revered cousins because the right car can provide a satisfying driving experience. Such is the case with this 1986 Pontiac Trans Am. It presents well as an original survivor, and the only reason it seeks a new home is because its elderly owners no longer use it as its creators intended. Therefore, they have listed the Trans Am here on Craigslist in Orange, California. You could drive this gem home by handing them $8,200, and I must say a big thank you to Barn Finder Pat L. for spotting this beauty.

The owner appears to be a Pontiac fan because the Trans Am is not the only car they currently have on the market. Those seeking something newer might find this 2006 Solstice more to their liking. However, since it is twice the price of our feature car, budget-conscious buyers will probably focus on this beauty. The Trans Am presents nicely in Code 40 White, and a garage-kept life has allowed it to remain well preserved. The paint retains a healthy shine, and any flaws or defects are minor. The panels are straight, while the dry climate has kept it rust-free. The original owner ordered it with the optional T-top, allowing the occupants to make the most of the Californian sunshine. The glass and trim are in good order, as are the wheels. Those wishing for extra protection during this car’s downtime will welcome the included car cover.

General Motors focused heavily on weight-saving measures and aerodynamic efficiency when designing its Third Generation pony cars. Although engine power figures remained relatively modest into the 1980s, these cars could be surprisingly lively performers. This Trans Am’s 305ci V8 sends 150hp and 235 ft/lbs of torque to the rear wheels via the desirable five-speed manual transmission. The ¼-mile ET of 16.9 seconds was what buyers expected during that period, but the sleek body allowed this Pontiac to hit 132mph. A new owner who isn’t concerned about total originality could improve upon those figures without spending a fortune. The seller indicates this classic has only clocked 200 miles since receiving a new clutch and is in excellent mechanical health. It runs and drives well and comes with the original Dealer Documentation, Owner’s Manual, Shop Manual, and a significant collection of other paperwork.

Cars from the 1980s could often develop tired and tatty interiors as time, use, and UV exposure took a heavy toll on cloth, vinyl, and plastic. The impressive presentation inside this Trans Am confirms the car has been treated respectfully. The leather on the wheel looks slightly tired, although it might respond to some attention with a high-quality conditioner. The cloth and vinyl are free from wear and physical damage, with the same true of the carpet and plastic. The interior is unmolested and is quite well-appointed in a 1980s context. The new owner receives ice-cold air conditioning, power windows, cruise control, a tilt wheel, a remote driver’s mirror, and an AM/FM radio/cassette player with an oh-so-1980s graphic equalizer.

This 1986 Pontiac Trans Am probably isn’t perfect, but it represents an affordable way to join the world of classic car ownership. It seems to have led a sheltered life, and extracting improved performance should be easy for those unconcerned about originality. The price looks highly competitive in the current market, and I won’t be surprised if someone snaps it up pretty quickly. Could that person be you?

Nice looking T/A. Clean appearance without all the scoops and bulges. Entry V8 and manual will keep things interesting. Go find a rolling twisting road to enjoy the fall colors.
