Affordable E24: 1982 BMW 633CSI

Despite the rapid rise in price for some European classic models, there are still plenty of affordable options out there packing plenty of style and that are (reasonably) reliable. The E24 chassis BMW 6-Series is a great example of this, as this 1982 635CSI coupe listed here on craigslist for $8,000 goes to show us. It’s not perfect, but it’s a runner and its California roots mean it’s likely rust-free.

Making this one more desirable is the 5-speed manual it’s equipped with. The 6-Series, otherwise known by its internal chassis code of E24, is a handsome design that has aged well. In fact, most BMW enthusiasts would likely opine that BMW hasn’t made an attractive “big” coupe since the E24. The only way to make it better would be to add a set of European bumpers, headlights, and front air dam. The seller’s car is a standard U.S.-spec model, as its bulbous “safety” bumpers reveal.

The seller notes that it is a bit of a rolling project, but fortunately, the flaws seem to be mostly cosmetic in nature. The seats definitely need some work, with rips noted in the driver’s seat and plenty of other tell-tale signs of wear and tear. I’d rip these seats out, personally, as they don’t do much to hold you in place. BMW sold the later E24s with a set of optional sport seats, and those do a much better job of holding you in place, and also are more aesthetically pleasing.

Of course, among BMW nerds, finding a complete tool kit is akin to discovering the Holy Grail. It would shock you what some enthusiasts would be willing to pay for a nice set of red-handle screwdrivers, with some of the best sets selling for a number that rivals what many of us have paid for a rolling project car. Regardless, it’s a serious bonus for anyone looking to take on a driver-quality car like this, and is perhaps a harbinger of how well this 6-Series has been looked after. These are nice cars but no information on the engine would have me digging deep into what it is. Nothing cheap about repairing BMW engines. For he price it could be a good rebuild project, and the mentioned switch to European style bumpers and spoilers would really help on his one.

A rust free 5-speed E24 that is priced right. He should not have a problem moving it. Those engines are pretty durable if maintained and 10X easier on the wallet over the M5 M635i cars. My 535i 5-speed was one of the nicest cars to drive with old school build quality. One of the most pleasing door closures and full leather seats. Not just the seating area. I recently had upholstery off of a late model BMW seat with leather and I swear I thought it was vinyl. The leather was paper thin compared to classic Mercedes and BMW leather.

This one shows much better in some of the pictures on the CL ad. Sure would be nice to see some photos under the hood? Maybe a few undercarriage photos? Very solid durable cars, engine and chassis. I would much prefer to work on a BMW from the 1980’s than their current offering.

82 can be a rough year on parts. Some of the car based on the 77-81 model and some parts based on the 83-89 chassis. My least favorite year for that reason. All in all, beautiful cars.

A big DUFF BMW. Ponderous on the road. If you really want a tourer a Jaguar is better at it.

Looking at this reminds me to give my ’85 635CSI some attention besides just sitting in the driveway. Beautiful cars and handles well for their age

I had an 84 with a stick. Very problematic but it was used and I knew little of its history. I got rid of it and bought a 76 2002 which I really like and still have. These are great looking cars that scream 80s hip.

When I spotted this one on CL, it reminded me of the car that a couple of young brothers that I worked with shared one. This was 20+ years ago and must have been a hand me down from their surgeon father.

To me, these just have a certain style that really stands out.

A fellow in the next town over owned on about like this back in the day. Had a cycle shop, bike and motor. Loved his bikes and cars. I came to know him when he was looking for a new truck. Always enjoyed his stories and visits. RIP John.
