If I’d been old enough to go car shopping back in the late sixties, a visit to the AMC dealership would have probably been on my agenda, as in 1968 the underdog brand introduced a cool two-seater called the AMX. At the time, the only other U.S. competitor with the same number of seats was the Corvette, but the American Motors Corporation offering was a lot more affordable. Despite the lower price, just 6,725 units found homes during the first year of production, so these are a bit of a rarity in the muscle car market. This 1968 AMC AMX is in Oakland, California, and can be found here on Craigslist, with the seller describing it as almost entirely original. This one comes with a price tag of $18,500, and we’d like to thank reader T.J. for sending us the tip here!
The seller, Classic Cars West, says they’re selling the AMX on consignment, and it looks like a lot of detailing was done before the photo shoot took place. As original as this one’s thought to be, I’m guessing that might still be the factory paint outside, and the finish still looks quite good overall considering the age here. The bad news is dents and rust don’t buff out, with some of each visible, mostly along the lower quarter panels. It will be a tough decision for the next owner to choose whether to address those body imperfections immediately, or just enjoy this one and be thankful the AMC still presents as well as it does.
A 340 is mentioned, but the seller may mean a 343 under the hood, which he says is Go-Pack equipped. The Go-Package proved popular on these cars, and it was an excellent option that got buyers a few performance upgrades, such as a limited-slip differential which AMC called the “Twin-Grip”. A more heavy-duty suspension was also included, along with a better cooling system and power front disc brakes. Not much is specifically addressed regarding the engine, but the compartment appears tidy and it’s great to see that this one came from the factory with air conditioning.
The red interior seems to still be in reasonable condition for a driver, with the threads on the floor starting to wear thin, but no worries as a new carpet kit is included. The steering wheel shows a few cracks but the instrument panel and factory AM radio appear to be very nicely preserved, and what a treat to find a tilt column in here! All things considered, this one seems like a winner in my book, and I’d probably just install the carpet and call it a day, at least for a while. What are your thoughts on this first-year AMX?

Looks like they caught a guardrail in the passenger side power sliding, or is that Bondo? If you look past that though, this is a very nice ride.
Early production car, as the ‘sequence number’ is on the glove box. Of course, most know the numbers are not quite sequential, but they give a rough idea. 343 is a great engine. I dont think the seats are original, and they definitely dont have the original coverings. I’m sure I will be corrected, but I dont think headrests were an option until mid-year 68. If I was in the market for an AMX, I would definitely be interested in this one.
The seat are not original, or they have been covered. I had a 68 with red interior.
Love AMX’s this looks nice !
Headrests were available for all 1968 Javelins & AMXs (1968.5) at a cost of $43. They became mandatory equipment on January 1st, 1969. Many 1968 AMXs had them.
Love the AMCs. <3200lbs, 280hp/365lb-ft. These came w 3.15 gearsets std. But the folks at AMC also offered everything in-between up to a 5.00 ! Talk about a Go-Pkg 🏁
That passenger side is really a fright. And the driver’s quarter is also suspect. Diss-missed!
Schultz! Sound the alarm, release the dogs!
Agree with Rex. Do a closeup of any one of the body pictures. This one should be named Bondo Betty. I bet if the body were dipped you would have swiss cheese. I suspect there is a reason why no underside shots were included in the listing. Too bad because these are cool cars.
On a family vacation in the early 70’s riding in the back of the family Ford station wagon I caught a glimpse of an AMX.
Been smitten by them ever since.
IIRC, late in the TV series “Adam-12”, this was LAPD Training Officer Peter D. Malloy’s (Martin Milner) personal ride, but his was yellow. A link to a picture of his car appears below, from the episode titled “Krash” (Season 6, Episode 18). Thanks to IMDB.com for the source material.

The car appears again in Season 7, Episode 20, “Operation Action”
That’s a Matador in the picture, and we are talking about AMXs here.
Or am I missing something?
White AMX, no Matador. There’s something in the air….the hot tub is acting weird, and my garage door opener stopped working.
Martin Milner`s car in the show was a yellow Matador.
I have the rear quarter that car needs.
If it was a 390 Go Pak l could probably over look the other imperfections at this ask.
always kool
not for me, only in the last few years (since comin here) and a bud had 1 in the day.
Too bad.
I really like them now & price is up too much for me. I need every stud in stable to work for it’s feed (a ‘sports car” or something like this is superfluous). Joinin U today, seein “the ocean waves in white” here along w/the price confirms they’ve moved beyond my reach…
Had a 343 engine in my Javelin and it had plenty of power!! Can’t see this one being a slouch at a lighter weight.
