This 1970 AMC AMX looks like a sad and sorry sight, with its paint obscured by a heavy layer of dust suggesting it hasn’t seen a road in years. However, this is one of those “ugly duckling to beautiful swan” stories, with the seller returning this classic to its former glory. Its 360/4-speed drivetrain promises excellent performance, and all someone needs to do is hand over the cash to drive it away. The seller has listed the AMX here on eBay in Inverness, Florida. Bidding sits below the reserve at $23,350 with plenty of time for interested parties to pursue this classic further.
AMC produced the AMX for three years, offering buyers an alternative to the Chevrolet Corvette if they craved a two-seater with a V8 under the hood. The 1970 model year marked the end of the line, with our feature car rolling off the line that year. Its history is unclear, although there is no doubt that the seller is a genuine fan of these cars. This is the ninth they have owned since 1977, and it is a gem. They started their transformation with what proved to be a sound foundation. They handed the AMX to a professional for the replacement of the lower rear quarter panels and lower trunk extensions, which was the only rust to be found anywhere. Once it was safely back in their garage, they applied a fresh coat of the car’s original Glen Green paint. The seller emphasizes that it isn’t a show car, but should be considered a tidy driver-grade classic. They identify a slight color mismatch on the right rear quarter panel as its only cosmetic flaw. The panels are straight, the contrasting White stripes look crisp, and there are no visible glass or trim issues.
Powering this AMX is a 360ci V8, teamed with a four-speed T-10 manual transmission and power steering. AMC produced more potent versions of the AMX in 1970, but with the company’s Sales Brochure quoting power and torque figures of 290hp and 395 ft/lbs, the car’s performance will be nothing to sneeze at. Potential buyers can consider this a turnkey classic. The engine has clocked around 5,000 miles since receiving a rebuild, while new rear springs, brake lines, and fuel lines were added. The 360 runs perfectly, the T-10 shifts smoothly, and it appears that the winning bidder could fly in and drive this classic home.
The seller didn’t restrict their attention to this AMX’s exterior and drivetrain, treating the seats to new foam and Black vinyl covers. They added new matching carpet, and the results justified the effort. It looks crisp and clean, with only what appears to be slight deterioration of the woodgrain on the glovebox door as a genuine fault. One task facing the buyer will be sourcing and installing a new headliner. However, these are readily available, so that is a task that won’t break the bank.
One of the most rewarding aspects of writing for Barn Finds is seeing classic cars that have been returned from the brink. The sight of a tired and neglected vehicle returned to its former glory is reward in itself, and that is the case with this 1970 AMC AMX. It appears to need little beyond a headliner, some minor paint correction, and a new owner who is willing and able to continue treating it with the respect it has recently received. I would love that person to be one of our readers, because you know how to preserve and respect classics. Do we have any takers?

Gorgeous!! After watching the new documentary I have more interest in AMC, I would rock this so hard!
Hey, what is the name of tge documentary? What’d I miss? I would drive the snot out of this even before seeing it. Would love to have a 70 AMX to compliment my 70 Machine!
It’s called “The Last Independent Automaker”
On PBS by the way.
A real labor of love and pride in workmanship. Always liked these, and one like this is one my SuperLotto winning ticket list.
Working with limited funds, AMC was able to come up with this nifty 2-seater by basically reskinning the Javelin. They did a great job and I’m a fan of both cars. Though nice, should they have built it? Considering their financial situation, a niche car certainly wasn’t going to change their fortunes. But then again, this was probably all they could do, because if they could have, they should have built an all-new platform for the masses. Studebaker made the same mistake with the Avanti, a really nice, exotic car that had no chance to save the company.
The Pacer was on an all new platform for the masses…
I race in-the street back in the days! These fellow was a serious macht with a little tricks ( Holey four barrels 750 cfm, big headers and just a little swift in the head with a 170 cam ( isky) at the time ! Well still in my mind until today the AmX came with posse- traction and hurst shift! Just said even today big ( Respect for that beautiful cars , ππππ
For $30 K or more, it better come with a REAL spare tire !
My memory is that this was the first application of the compact spare. I don’t recall any prior to seeing them in AMX. But I am learning my fifty odd year memories are very unreliable.
Youβre correct.
The space saver spare was available in the 67 Camaro and Firebird, I’m unaware of others earlier than that, but at 73 years of age, I *might* have forgotten a thing or two.
That’s the correct, original spare tire.
Knew a old timer back in the day that used to race on a track. He said he switched from a mustang cobra to a amx. According to him, due to the wider stance, the amx hugged corners like a magnet. The cobra would catch up to a amx, but the nose was to light and would start to raise and lose traction. Putting weights in the nose would kill the ability to catch the amx… Don’t kill the messenger…
tops right there.
Thank you
Here’s a really nice one.
Watching this auction, not because I can afford to bid on it, but interested in where it ends up.
Looks like a decent rebuild. It’s good to see these AMC’s appreciating a bit especially since this one doesn’t come with the 390 with the Go Pak. Nice AMX should bring maybe 30k. Nice ones are like this one are becoming very desirable.
With a positraction and a 390 v8 and a larger carburation was a powerful package at the time with some minors twicks ( heathers and a a litle stronger cams ! Fast little thing fun to wacht ! πππ
what I don’t understand is they said that they gave it a repaint to the original but then again they say that there is a mismatch in paint in the lower quarter.if that’s the case they couldn’t have painted the whole car.call me stupid but if I paint a car I am going to use the same paint for the whole car.what happened?
You restore the car but do not replace the headliner that needs replacing?
Too bad the color is dark green. 1970 was all about day-glow bright colors which always shows off the design of the car much better than dark colors. AMX, one of the best looking cars of all time. I liked the styling of my 1973 Mark Donohue edition yellow Javelin, but it did seem as if AMC was trying to make the car resemble Ford’s Mach 1 Mustang. Similar profile.
The Donohue Javelins were a 1970 option only.
Just a great car! Just need to take care like old pale! Good man!
I love it, and the 360 4 speed is still a lot of fun!
SOLD for $33,099.
