Barn Fresh Tii: 1975 BMW 2002

$5,000 seems like a decent price for a claimed rust-free BMW 2002 Tii, the high performance variant of the iconic sports sedan. While it looks to have sat outside for decades, the limited photos may reveal a project with some potential – especially as good Tii’s sell for increasingly higher amounts. Find it here on craigslist near San Francisco, and go here if the ad is archived.

The interior is encouragingly stock and not as tattered as I would have expected given the exterior condition. The stock four-spoke steering wheel remains in place, as does the plastic accordion on the gear shift. I think I can just make out the side of the Tii-specific dash clock as well. Seats are nothing exotic – unlike the standard Recaros in the later 320is – but they look serviceable. Although I doubt it, the dash may be crack-free from this vantage point.

The Tii-specific intake runners and manifold are present, and this being a later car, they’re the less desirable plastic variety. Dust is heavy everywhere you look, so there’s little question the motor has fired at any point in the recent past. BMW fanatics are famous for getting this old motors to turn over; check out 2002 expert Paul Wegweiser’s blog on how he brought a 1972 Tii back from the dead.

What’s incredible is I can’t even tell what the original color was based on these photos. It may have been a shade of brown known as “Siennabraun” at one point in time, but it looks too light for that. Regardless, if the rust-free condition assessment holds out, this seems like a decent price for a classic that continues to enjoy good parts availability, wonderful enthusiast community and nicely rising prices.

Ad has been” flagged for removal” Does that mean it sold or something is wrong with the ad?

It looks like the metal has a crack in it just below the rear window, (in the side view) I blew up the picture to get a better look, and it sure looks like it. I could be wrong it has happened once or twice LoL

Only early Tiis had plastic C runners and they cracked and leaked. These are the more desirable cast runners.

I think they totally ruined the clean looks of the early 2002’s with those hideous bumpers and black grill.

Only thing wrong I can find is that it’s listed as a 1975 on Barn Finds. 1974 was the last year the U.S. saw the Tii, but the archived craigslist ad has it listed as a 1974. It may have been flagged for the “zero rust” comment in the ad.

Wondering if it is possible to do, but maybe someone grabbed the guys number from the ad, then flagged the ad so no one else could get to it. Just speculating.

Another car I should never have sold!

Though it was a ’72 02 sunroof in Baikal Blue. Just by chance I happened on one of my holy grails in a parking garage recently…looks like a 72-73 Tii…in a similar color to my Baikal Blue. Its harder to get excited about the later square taillights though…especially in the condition of the subject vehicle

Flagged (in this case) probably means that someone who wants it also wants to block out other buyers

I need the front clip on portion of the air cleaner if anyone spots one, USA or Europe no problem, Pat

If there was no Tii model in ’75, then what’s with the fuel-injected engine? It should have come with a single-barrel Solex, like mine above, if I’m correct. And geez people, WASH your car and you might get more money out of it!
