Beautiful in Black: 1968 Dodge Coronet R/T

The R/T (Road/Track) designation for Dodge’s muscle cars first appeared in 1967. It began with the Coronet and eventually became part of the Charger and Challenger vocabulary. Standard in the B-body R/Ts was a 440 cubic inch “Magnum” V8 that was the most potent in the Mopar arsenal except for the 6-Pack and the Hemi. The seller has a stellar 1968 Coronet R/T, which was one of 10,000 2-door hardtops produced that year. The engine is not original, and the rest of the automobile looks to have been nicely restored. Located in Modesto, California, this potent hot rod is available here on craigslist for $72,000.

Coronet R/Ts are sometimes forgotten from 1968 to 1970 because the Charger R/T sold so much better. The Coronet R/T was gone in 1971 because there were no more Coronet 2-doors, with all the attention shifted to the Charger. The seller says this vehicle has just 43,000 miles and has spent many years in a shop which helped to hold the odometer reading down. Why the engine had to be changed is unknown, and we assume the numbers match on the 727 automatic transmission.

This Dodge is well-equipped with power steering and brakes. It came with factory air conditioning, too, but the hardware was pulled out yet saved. No use of the word “restoration” is included anywhere, but this Coronet must have been. The interior looks fabulous and the black paint flawless. This appears to have been a vinyl top or two-tone car at one time, as the chrome trim remains where the top would have been divided from the bottom.

The red stripes look great on the rear, as do the aftermarket wheels and Mickey Thompson donuts. We’re told this muscle machine attracts attention wherever it goes, and I’m not surprised. The seller says the market value of the car is around $80,000, but that sounds like Charger territory with an original motor. The seller adds there is too much to outline in the listing, but for the asking price, I would put forth a maximum effort. Thanks for the tip, Barn Finder Barney!
