Beautiful S-Code! 1967 Ford Mustang GTA 390

First-gen Mustangs, which I would shorten to include just the ’65 to ’70 version, are still so common that it takes a pretty spectacular example to stand out. Here is just such an example in the form of a 1967 S-Code GTA – it’s a real looker! Located in Carver, Minnesota, this big-block fastback is available, here on Barn Finds Classifieds for $78,000.

Wearing a GTA designation means that this fastback is an automatic transmission equipped GT model with GT equipment including a V8 engine, fog lights, 70 series tires, front disc brakes, special handling package (H.D. suspension), chrome quad exhaust outlets on dual exhaust equipped models, and a rocker panel stripe. Specifically, the engine is a 320 gross HP, 390 CI “FE” V8 that has been correctly rebuilt and, “runs and drives like new“. Besides the C-6 automatic transmission, a 3.25:1 limited-slip differential puts the power to the pavement. The seller adds that this car is believed to have been powered at one time, for racing, by a 427 CI powerplant so it’s not clear if the underhood 390 prime mover is the original issue. Also mentioned is the inclusion of 428 CJ “jet-hot” coated exhaust manifolds.

Having undergone a ten-year restoration, this one-time Raven Black Mustang is now resplendent in a deep, cranberry red finish. It is claimed to be rust-free with a straight body. There is mention made of a replaced driver’s side quarter panel but you wouldn’t know it reviewing the images. The original fourteen-inch styled steel wheels are included in the sale but this pony is currently rolling on wide and wider fifteen inchers. To round out the restoration, which occurred only 4K miles ago, all of the glass has been replaced.

Inside, we’re treated to the original upholstery and it appears as brand-spankin’ new, no mean feat for a 55-year-old interior. And it’s not just the upholstery, it’s the dash, instrument panel, door panels, and center console – it’s all excellent. The seller mentions that Classic Auto A/C, along with “Rhodes Restoration” power steering has been added. I remember what my ’67 SS396 Chevelle, sans power steering, was like in tight manoeuvers, I have to imagine that this big engined Mustang was probably a similar handful. For complete born-with documentation, a Marti Report is included.

I’d put this ’67 Mustang GTA in the “as good as it gets” category. It’s always nice to see a muscle car from the old days, one that was probably thrashed on the strip, make a return engagement in its “as intended” status. Other than a new caretaker, this Mustang needs nothing, any interest?

That’s a good looking car, don’t care what your favorite brand is Ford made the 67 Mustang with great proportions. The 15″ rims fill the wheel wells, what’s not to like. Big block, air and shiny red paint.

Nice looking car, but the dash really attention or replaced. All that black looks like the dash was restored with a spray can. Overall though, a really nice looking GTA!

There should be a built in tach on a GTA.

        Gerald,
Does your tach comment apply to both 1967 and 1968? I’m curious as I own a 1968 GTA and it did not come with a factory tach.
        cheers,
        bt

Great looking car in person. Car is always popular at local car shows. I wish I had the money!

No matter originality or not this is a gorgeous ‘67 Mustang…
I’ll go further on the generational designations for mustangs….
    1st Gen: 64 1/2 – 66
2nd Gen: 67 – 68 (Widened for a big block and heavily modified from previous years)
    3rd Gen: 69 – 70 (Totally different body)
    4th Gen: 71 – 73 (Huge difference literally)
    And on…..

I’ve owned 1-2 of each of these and subsequent generations up to my current S550 and never considered (Regardless of what someone else says) any of them to be of the same generation.

While I completely agree with your generational breakdown, colloquially speaking, the ‘64.5-’73 gets lumped together as Gen-1 in every source that I have used. I guess it’s because of the platform similarities.

Yes a real beauty, but for that dollar amount there is so much more out there.

I loved my 67 S code until he got rear ended one snowy night coming home from a weekend drill.

The luxury decor interior, which I believe came on all GTA’s, would have included stainless trim on the dash as well.

Weird to see one all restored. So many for sale are total projects.

    Does it have a tachometer?

What kind of gas mileage would a 390 get if I bought this car?

Awell tuned and properly jetted 390 will give you upper mid teens mileage with a 3.25 rear end like this one. I own a 69 Mach 1 with 390 plus 4 speed and 3.25 rear end.

Nice car, but isn’t this really strong $ ask for an automatic without matching numbers?

Wheel centers should be blue, not red.
Almost looks like it has the tilt/stowaway wheel
