Nice Trade-In: 1984 Dodge Ramcharger 4×4

Disclosure: This site may receive compensation from some link clicks and purchases.

We don’t know much about this 1984 Dodge Ramcharger 4×4 other than what the VIN tells us. The seller gives one line in their eBay listing, “Nice Ramcharger I took in on trade. All info is as told to me.” That’s it. It looks like a nice example and can be found listed here on eBay in Nampa, Idaho. The current bid price is $3,400, but the reserve hasn’t been met yet.

The second-generation Ramcharger was made from 1981 through 1993 here and until 1996 in Mexico, and we’ve seen many nice examples over the years here at Barn Finds. I don’t remember a tan, or beige, one before. It has a county truck look, or a Forest Service or other agency vehicle. We don’t know anything about its history as the seller gives basically zero information about it in their listing. Maybe they don’t know its history either. The underside looks solid with just normal surface rust from what we can see.

The eBay vehicle history report doesn’t shed any light either, only showing ownership history back to 2021 and it’s had two owners since then. I don’t see any flaws on the exterior, do you? One thing I do notice is that it appears the VIN tag has been taped off. I can’t imagine Dodge did it like that from the factory, so it may or may not have been repainted at some point. The rear cargo area looks more appropriately scuffed up, I almost wish the exterior paint looked like that, but that just sounds weird now that I say it out loud.

The interior is also in beautiful condition. The mileage is listed as 80,174 miles and it looks like a relatively low-mile vehicle. The rubber brake pedal pad isn’t rounded off, there are no dash cracks that I can see or cracks in the steering wheel. We don’t get to see the seat fabric or vinyl, but blanket seat covers always work for me, at least temporarily. The back seat looks like new. A “Beige Sand” Ramcharger with a taupe vinyl interior isn’t a powerful color combination, but hey, this is a 4×4 truck first and foremost and if it’s solid and runs great, who cares about anything else?

The engine is the standard one for this truck, a Dodge 318-cu.in. OHV V8, which would have had 150 horsepower and 255 lb-ft of torque when new. It sends power through a three-speed TorqueFlite automatic and a two-speed NP208 transfer case to the rear wheels or all four as needed. Does it run? I’m guessing yes. Does it run well? We don’t know but have to believe it does given the apparent condition, but there’s no word on its operating condition at all. Any thoughts on this Ramcharger?

Nice find Scotty. It looks like a solid base model Ramcharger. Although, the color I think is a little off from original if you peek at the doorjams etc. Love the optional Ford hubcaps ( just kidding) But seriously, I prefer steel rims with hub caps, but again, thats me. I dont remember seeing any with a pickup step bumper, but its clean and in good condition. If it’s bought at a good price, this could be a good buy, I dont see any rust. And it looks like the sheetmetal is straight and rust free which is a huge plus.

Thanks, sir! I agree on the color, the body color looks more tan than beige, at least according to the jambs as you say, and also the color chart for 1984 Ramchargers. The wheels look incredibly small, but I think that’s a pretty cool look, most of them have gigantic fat tires and I kind of like the innocent look of this one.

I just lean that way my Dad always bought the base model “Custom Deluxe” Chevy trucks, with the exception of one GMC Sierra ( base model). So I was used to the plain steelies and small hub caps. Its normal for me. And now, its different from most others because it doesn’t have massive tires.

Yes it’s been re-painted…..you can see that on the left door tag……and those Ford Bronco hubcaps don’t look bad !

Folks, here’s what a professional writer does, reports on the vehicle in an informative way, and not the dismal experience I happen to know what the author experienced, a (Plymouth) Trail Duster, I believe, remains one of the worst vehicles he had. There’s credibility there, folks.
The Ramchargers were certainly adequate trucks, had all the guts of the pickups, but for some reason, only a shred were sold compared to Bronco, Blazer or Jeep. Of those I have seen, the straight tan ones were some sort of municipal entity, forest service, I believe. Any other Ramchargers I saw were 2 tone. I think the straight tan may have been reserved for whatever agency. No doubt purchased from an auction and touched up. $3400 still top bid. Limited interest here.

Like Driveinstile says, with his tongue in his cheek, “optional Ford hubcaps.” It’s hard to get something past the many well-informed Barn Finds commenters.

You’re very kind Bob. You should include yourself in that comment. I learn a lot from not only the articles but the comments, yours included. I just thought it was funny with the hub caps, its actually something that was not all that uncommon years ago, you find a clean set of 4 matching caps, and why not?

I have owned 3 Ramchargers. One was nearly this color. Great vehicles. Count on 9 MPG no matter what you are doing with it. Almost no blind spots with all the glass. This one is amazingly clean and rust free. I just dont need a 4th one right now.

The 9 mpg makes me laugh and cringe at the same time! Been there, done that.

The old 235 75R15 tires! I had a lot of vehicles with that size tire!

To me, the color suggests that it was a Department of the Interior, vehicle, although it seems a bit off color. I used to push vehicles into the spray booth at the Chrysler plant in Fenton, Mo, when I was a bit younger, 1965-66.
