Better Than Stocks and Bonds? 1956 Cadillac

1956 Eldorados are beautiful, and feature great styling, with a unique exhaust that comes through the rear bumper. But is a car such as this better than stocks and bonds? Well the seller seems to think so. Although this Caddy is a bit rough, it appears to be an original Dual Quad carb car with air conditioning. Rough around the edges there could still be some hope for this still attractive machine. Offered for an opening bid of $3,500 with several days remaining. Check it out here on ebay out of Wallingford, Connecticut.

The exciting part is the relatively complete drive-train. The dual “gulps” are still in place, and the air conditioning system is as well.  Having last run 10 years ago, I would guess the last 10 years of this cars life were spent in that exact spot. Maybe with a little luck, and some oil in the cylinders, this engine could be turned over.

Inside there is a fair amount of dirt and chaos that welcomes you to this Caddy’s poor care. The door jamb has plenty of surface rust, and the floor behind the seat is crispy. It isn’t terribly apparent from the photos, but the condition of the floors is a bit questionable.

Outside there are still some traces of the factory blue paint, but for the most part surface rust has taken over this classy classic. There are missing trim items, as well as the taillights that are hopefully inside of this Eldorado. Looking past the surface rust, there isn’t much rot to be seen. The roof line near the rear window has a small area of rot, and the lower quarters are a little crispy, but are not too bad off. There is enough remaining of this Caddy that it would seem a waste not put it to use. Would you trade in your Stocks and Bonds for this ’56 Eldorado?

My Godfather had one in black (of course) as well as a few other Caddy’s. Beautiful riding Cadillac with a feel like you were floating. Better than stocks ? That’s subjective and fluctuates with the market. The seller is hoping/reaching.

It would take a small fortune to restore this back to a proper Cadillac once again! Too rusty for me!

Unique to have the exhaust exit via the bumper? My 1956 Continental Mark II also had that design feature.

Now that’s a beautiful classic, not to mention extremely rare. Too bad they didn’t build more Mark IIs. My compliments.

eh … people throw around words which don’t mean what they think. Dude really meant “unusual;” which it was. Worse is “decimate,” which means a 10% loss, not “devastation” or worse, “annihilation.” Rant over. Nice Mk II.

My 1956 Thunderbird has exhausts that exit through the corners of the bumper. It was a very common feature from 1955 to about 1960.

I guess it took five years for the industry to realize that leaded gas passing through hot plated steel was an invitation to rapid rusting

My exhaust is currently routed down and away from the bumper

The seller’s house looks as bad as his cars. Let’s surely heed his investment advice.

This is more like a rust find than a barn find.

Let me see……..allow a car like this to return to the earth and become not much more than a planter……..then tell me it’ll be worth a fortune. Uhuh. Too bad

Still worth a rehab…juuust barely. Looks like he’s got a ’64 Chrysler Imperial ragtop in the background. That might interest me more.

If you check his other eBay listings, you’ll see the Imperial, right now bid to under $1400. It’s in crappy condition, not for the faint of heart.

Good luck finding the missing trim pieces for this hulk. That alone would eat up most of your 401k. Then you could dump your inheritance into the bodywork. And take out a second on your house for the interior.

Just putting it into plain financial terms…

I think the seller’s financial acumen could possibly be related to the deteriorating condition of the other items and house in the pictures! :-)

First of all, this is not a personal attack, just true comments to what is already posted. I cannot believe some of your comments, maybe this person struggles to make a living, have you ever considered he might not be a spoiled brat as some of you sound to be !! Probably most of you live off the money mommy and daddy gave you as you grew up, and probably still taking care of you. Sit back and think, what if he is struggling due to health reasons and he has to do this do pay medical bills, now, would that change you comments, or put a lump in your throat ! I thought this was about cars, barn finds, not judging how people live. Think of others before you do yourself, life will be much brighter, if not, then your not considered human. Enough said .

I think that you are missing the point. To me, those comments are an attempt to point out the disparity between the seller’s comments of how fine of an investment this car is and his apparent lack of income.

Amusing to some, apparently not to others.

They can be made beautiful……..This 1956 Eldorado Biarritz, originally owned by Elvis has been in our family since 1977, and is currently on loan and display at Elvis Graceland Auto Museum since 1990….A full restoration was necessary in 1977.

That 1956 Cadillac that got fully restored in 1977 had 40 fewer years of rust, mold, rodents, and any other purely age related issues due to just sitting, especially outside, or even inside an unheated barn.

I agree the Imperial convertible is more interesting to me, and I’m a GM guy! Mid-50’s Cadillacs are always showing up for sale or at shows. Can’t remember the last time I saw a Man From UNCLE-era Chrysler convertible out and about.

Just noticed the vacuum wiper motor. On a Cadillac? Really?. My 56 F100 has electric. I realize they all used vacuum wipers at one time, but come on now, the top of the line Cadillac? But then again, it is general motors. LOL
