Few brands have stayed as true to their heritage as Morgan has. Their Plus 4 model was produced off and on from 1950 until 2020, when they introduced their new CX platform. The Plus 4 kept the same basic formula throughout those 70 years. Engines changed, safety features were added, and electronics evolved, but they retained what made it a Morgan Plus 4. They even offered a four-seat variant for those who wanted the joys of driving a Morgan but needed room for the whole family! The example being offered here as a Barn Finds Classified is one of those four-seaters and is in impressive condition, having recently been overhauled. It’s located in Cheshire, Connecticut, and has a clean title.
The Plus 4 was essentially a larger and more powerful version of the company’s 4/4 model. Increasing the length of the car provided additional legroom and space for the larger engines. Early cars received the 1.9-liter Triumph TR2 engine, but by the time this one was built, Morgan was using the 2.1-liter engine from the TR4. While they weren’t extremely high-performance engines, these Triumph units proved durable and offered considerably more power than the Ford engines used in the 4/4. To make room for a back seat, Morgan extended the rear body line and raised the front seats, allowing adults to ride comfortably in the rear seats.
Under the long bonnet, we find a 2138cc inline-four that was rebuilt by Morgan Cars Mid-Atlantic, and it’s paired to a Quantum Mechanics rebuilt 4-speed transmission. The engine bay looks very tidy, and the new dual SU HS6 carburetors are wearing pancake air cleaners. A new tubular manifold has been added, so this Morgan should sound great and have plenty of power to be fun. The seller has provided a list of all the new parts installed in the last 1k miles, which appears to address all the common Plus 4 problem areas.

The inside is just as nicely done as the rest of the car, with a new red leather interior and a new dashboard. All of the gauges and switches are present and in nice condition. While many people prefer the looks of the two-seater, these four-seaters are wonderful to drive. The seating position is very comfortable, as the seats sit a bit higher, giving you a commanding view of the road. This one appears to be well sorted throughout and would be a blast to take on driving events and to car shows.
Morgan only built about 4,500 Plus 4s between 1950 and 1969, very few of those were four-seaters. So, there really aren’t many of these around. They really are a unique car to drive, with their sliding-pillar front suspension and beautiful body lines. If you’ve been on the hunt for a ready-to-drive four-seater, here’s your chance!
