With values continuing to grow steadily, finding spotless and affordable Fox-Body Mustangs is becoming more difficult. This is especially true if potential buyers crave a GT with the fuel-injected V8 under the hood. That’s what makes our feature car stand out. It is a 1987 Mustang GT Convertible, it presents beautifully, and its pricing looks highly competitive. All that it needs is a new owner ready to hit the road for a spot of top-down touring on a sunny day. If you feel sorely tempted by this gem, you will find it located in Polk City, Florida, and listed for sale here on Barn Finds Classifieds and here on eBay. You could be slipping behind the wheel of this wonderful Convertible by handing the owner a mere $12,500.

There’s a bit to consider with this GT, and none of it seems bad. It is finished in Code 1C Black that is hard to fault. It holds an excellent depth of shine, with no blemishes or issues that are worth noting. This is especially true when we examine the front spoiler and the leading edge of the hood. It is common to see chips caused by errant stones in these areas, but this car looks spotless. The panels are laser straight, while there’s no evidence of rust or other nasty surprises. The Black soft-top is clean and well-preserved, and its fit is as tight as a drum. The plastic “aero” additions that form part of the GT package are in excellent condition, with no evidence of physical damage or deterioration. The Mustang rolls on a set of aftermarket alloy wheels that appear to be in as-new condition. Overall, the first impression that this GT makes is extremely positive.

When this Mustang rolled off the production line, it helped to consign the horror stories of The Malaise Era to the pages of history. Ford managed to get its head around fuel injection and electronic engine management systems, and they applied these technologies to the 5.0-liter “HO” V8 that we find under the hood of this classic. Where the Mustang V8s of the mid to late 1970s gasped asthmatically and struggled to produce 140hp, the motor in this Convertible should be churning out 225hp. That needs to find its way to the road, and it does this effectively via the rear wheels and a four-speed automatic transmission. The driving experience should be pleasant and effortless, thanks to the inclusion of power steering and four-wheel power disc brakes. The performance potential means that this GT should be able to despatch the ¼ mile in 15.2 seconds before winding its way beyond 130mph. The owner has treated the ‘Stang to a few items in the past year, including a new exhaust and fresh tires. There are no fluid leaks or issues, and this classic runs and drives perfectly. The engine starts easily, and as you will hear in this YouTube video, that sweet little V8 sounds fantastic breathing through the new exhaust. The buyer will need to do nothing but slip behind the wheel and hit the open road.

I’m sure that some of you have been sitting there waiting for some bad news with this Mustang. I’m afraid you’ll need to keep waiting because its interior appears to be as spotless as the rest of the car. The Gray cloth trim shows no evidence of wear or marks, even on the outer edges of the front seats. The remaining trim is spotless, while the carpet is in excellent condition for its color and age. For those who like their tunes loud and clear (and who doesn’t?), this GT has an aftermarket stereo that includes a Pioneer double-DIN CD/DVD player with Bluetooth, a couple of amplifiers, and a subwoofer. If you feel like hosting a Rolling Stones gig, this could be the place to do it. If that isn’t enough, the Mustang is equipped with a high-quality alarm system with two sets of keys and remotes, ice-cold air conditioning with a new compressor, power windows, power locks, power lumbar support on both front seats, and cruise control.

It is undeniable that the values of Fox-Body Mustangs, especially those with the EFI V8 under the hood, continue to rise at an impressive rate. The GT derivatives have led this charge to the tune of 30% over the past three years, and this trend shows no evidence of slowing. They remain affordable today, but you have to wonder how long it will take for these classics to move beyond the reach of the average enthusiast. When you consider what it has to offer, our feature car looks exceptionally competitive, and potential buyers may need to act quickly if they wish to find it parked in their garage.

Very nice! Hard to find one of these without the bumpers scuffed to high heaven. I like everything but the wheels. I’d try to find something more original and then cruise.

    My opinion:
The automatic removes half the fun of owning this car.
