Big Block Droptop: 1968 Plymouth Sport Fury

“It’s easy to see why Fury started a movement. A momentum. And wound up the most successful car we’ve ever built. People who are just natural-born sports lovers love Sport Fury. Snap into a seatbelt. You’ll understand.” So says a 1968 Plymouth Fury brochure talking about the Sport Fury. The seller has this one posted here on craigslist in Harrisonville, Missouri and they’re asking $7,500. Here is the original listing, and thanks to Gunter K. for the tip!

What a great car in a great era. Ok, now that I think about it, 1968 wasn’t all wine and roses, but cars and trucks were great, the snowmobile industry was humming, motorcycles were fantastic and only getting better, and we could still get many body styles and trim levels such as Plymouth Fury offered its customers. A Sport Fury convertible with a 383 V8? Yes, please.

The fourth-generation Plymouth Fury was made for model years 1965 through 1968 in several body styles and trim levels, including for the Sport Fury, a two-door hardtop, a two-door fastback, and what has to be the most desirable version: a Sport Fury convertible. I’m going out on a limb speculating and “most-desirable” is one of those things like someone arguing that red is the best color or Zamfir was the king of the pan flute. Well, he was, that was a bad example. I personally like the VIP in either two-door or four-door form, but I’m… different.

The seller says that this is a project car and has the “normal rust.” You can see some of that in the exterior photos. The interior looks nicer than I thought it would, but these have to be replacement material, doesn’t it? Maybe not, but I don’t see anything like it in any Fury brochures. I like it, and it looks almost perfect. This car has a console, but not all of them did and that is a very desirable feature for a Sport Fury. Overall, I don’t see anything I would change with the interior, do you?

This isn’t the standard 318, it’s a 383-cu.in. OHV V8, which would have been factory-rated at either 290 or 330 horsepower and has a three-speed automatic. The seller says that this one runs but idles a bit iffy and should be trailered rather than driven. It has a new gas tank and fuel pump, factory AC (probably not currently working but it’s there, a huge bonus), new master cylinder, new brakes, tires, alternator, battery, etc. Hagerty is at $11,800 for a #4 fair-condition car so this one is a steal at its current asking price. Any thoughts on this Sport Fury?

You sure don’t see many of these. Maybe worth restoring. It’s going to take a little of everything. Of course you could clean it up and get some sunshine.

My neighbor has a 67′ Fury3 convert. white 318/auto plastic rear window around the corner from me. Nice car, she drives by on sunny days regularly. She likes my 4 Mopars too, she has 3 herself. Finally she stopped to ask me about my 68′ GTS. We began car talking…… And lo and behold. I told her of my 67′ Convert. Burgundy 318/auto. Sold it with broken glass window to a guy near by 15yrs ago. I hadn’t seen it for at least 5yrs since. Well, she told me this car was my old car! Small world. Rare cars. Today at least.

Fair price for this year Sport Fury drop top. And with factory AC? Probably already gone. It’s in clean survivor condition by the looks of it.

    I. Like it. And the price is fair. Rough idle? Maybe it just needs a tune-up, or it could be a sign of something more serious. Those sixties cars had all kinds of vacuum hoses and when they leaked… I’m with you on the interior, nice presentation I wouldn’t change a thing. Convert it to electronic ignition, maybe some bolt in go fast parts, fix that dent for sure in the front fender. And cruise.

My friend had a 68 fury ht 383 4spd bench seat. Blue white white vinyl top. Liked that one as I do this one. Bout time someone is selling this old mopar for a reasonable price. Normal rust could mean the top leaked under the boot area and the trunk area and rear frame may need attention. Even so worth being saved.

Nice car to work with. I would not however spend the money to restore this to original condition. This to me is a nice paint, interior, HEMI engine build to have fun and show without expectations of a trophy type of makeover. But that’s my opinion. Hope the buyer enjoys it the way they want.

Simple 60s Mopar to work on, probably only needs a tuneup and maybe a new carb and petronix ignition module. Good deal that fuel pump and gas tank were already replaces. Wonder if 68 Mopars came with front disc’s, I know some late 60s GMs or Ford did by then as options.
