Blank Canvas: 1966 Corvette

I’m sure whoever left the original dealership in 1966 with this Corvette coupe (one of 27,720 C2s produced that year) never expected it to end up engineless and transmissionless in a garage! That’s the situation we have here, though, with the car being listed for sale here on eBay with a buy it now of $31,000 and lower offers being invited. While it sounds like a home for Mustangs, Mavericks, and Pintos, Horseheads, New York is where to find this Corvette.

The seller tells us that “what you see is what you get” with the exception of a radiator and a shroud, so even the fuel cap is missing (possibly along with the tank). The paint is obviously several layers thick and is cracked and flaking off all over. The seller tells us that the car has been previously damaged and repaired on both the nose and driver’s side rear quarter panel. The missing window trim comes with the car with the exception of one piece. I’m sure there will be lots of detail components missing, but it’s nice to see wheel covers, tail lights, etc. intact.

Emblems, on the other hand, not so much. It would be nice to know what condition the bumpers were in. Does this seem like a lot of money to you for a car needing this stuff, even for a C2 Corvette?

I wish the shifter and transmission were in place, but on the other hand, it’s nice that the car was a manual to begin with. I’m wondering if it makes more sense to restomod (perish the thought, Jamie!) or restore this car. Or perhaps you would get it running with some sort of drivetrain (LSx, anyone?) and just deal with the cosmetics later?

The seats actually look really nice considering the rest of the car’s tattered appearance. The black is the original color, although the outside of the car should be silver.

And here’s the elephant in the room. Or, rather, the absence of one. What would you put in this hole? Anyone for a Ford V8? Mopar? Just kidding, folks! But with a blank canvas like this car, I’m really interested in what you would do!

“Resto-Mod” Corvettes are very popular right now, or at least seem to be at the auctions. If this is what you like this car would be a greta start, but even at that it dosen’t seem like a bargin.

“I have other parts not included in this auction.” Hopefully there’s a hostage negotiator somewhere out there looking for a Corvette to restore.

Is it salvaged title? Wrecks and engine gone?
Original vin? Or did it swap with engine to another vette? There’s a lot of vin places on a vette so check …

Its only 15+ to high 😏

Its cheaper to buy one running…

Fyi ..its a Chevy engine only car ..,,

With the price for all the Corvette customs on the rise. This thing is the perfect blank canvas. It will end up with a built LSD and 6spd. Then sell for $150K at BJ.

    To all dreamers…
Here’s a 66 coupe with everything and looks good for 40k.
I guess one could smoke some crack and buy the engine less one that needs 50 k to get going and 80 to 100 k when done ..
Hmm maybe your a money laundering person thats not to bright on concept ..🤔😜

Give it a year and it’ll be a numbers-matched big block car with complete history blah blah. Far too easy to fake, far too many people willing to pay big dollars for a fake. Even the NCRS judges don’t seem to care anymore.

Hmm…. Wonder what they did with drivetrain…in the one pic you can see starter with bolts laying there and some wood blocks like engine was removed not to long ago…sell car then magically a couple months later engine and trans pop up for sale…. seems a little sketchy..dunno but price is way out there..

Classic Steel you are so correct. I am looking locally at a 65 Coupe that is very similar to the 66 coupe here on barn finds as it has the motor missing and has been off the road for 30 + years. Owner has the same attitude and thinks the car is worth $35k and I passed on it. Your right you can buy one finished for less. Thanks for the link to the silver 66 coupe.

Agree with Classic Steel, especially in my case. Going only by what I see, and not ‘maybe one could get the car for 20k” the one referred to is a much better deal, especially for my facility/ability status. If my budget allowed, I’d probably be in a C2 of some kind. I don’t have concern about originality and like c2’s so much I’d be happy with a 250hp/power glide.
However, with the car listed here, following my budget/ability reality, I’d source a 350/5 speed so it was runner/driver and slowly work it up to something I’d be happy with.

Ridiculous price and not including other parts in the auction. The seller is the other end of a horse.

When I first saw the Cooper tires I knew this one wasn’t for me.

Those tires – traction bars, louvers on the rear glass are all cringeworthy for me. I’ll take the car though … Tremic and a GM Crate motor and of course some redline tires.
