Block Party: 1977 Lincoln Continental Mark V

Disclosure: This site may receive compensation from some link clicks and purchases.

We used to joke in high school that the Lincoln Continental was as long as a city block. This car is listed here on eBay with a Buy It Now Price of $16,000. The seller has also included a Make Offer option for buyer’s to offer a lower price if they want. The Lincoln Mark V is located in Miami, Florida and is said to be a low mileage survivor with only 47,600 miles. There are 4 days remaining in the listing.

The Lincoln Continental Mark V was offered from 1977 to 1979. It was the best selling of the Mark series with over 228,000 cars produced. The Lincoln Continental Mark V was the longest two door coupe sold  by Ford Motor Company at 230 inches long. It was only exceeded by the 4 door Continental sedan by 3 inches. Just to give you some perspective, the 2022 Chevrolet Suburban is 226 inches long! The tan leather interior looks to be in good shape with no noticeable defects. There is some wear on the seats.

The standard engine in the Continental Mark V was the 400 cubic inch V8 engine. It was fed through a 2 barrel Motorcraft carburetor and was factory rated at 179 horsepower and 329 lb ft of torque. In any state other than California, you could also order the optional 460 cubic inch V8 engine that came with a 4 barrel carburetor. This engine was rated at 208 horsepower and 356 lb ft of torque. Both engines were backed by Ford’s C-6 automatic transmission.

The Continental Mark V was marketed as the top of the line flagship of the Lincoln offerings in 1977. Some of the most famous design elements of the Lincoln was the “spare tire” deck lid  and the upright front grill. The hide away headlights were also a neat feature. Almost all Lincoln Continentals were built with a vinyl roof unless specifically deleted in a custom order. Interesting enough, in 1979, the vinyl roof option could not be deleted.

As oversized, and underpowered as this is, it still manages to look good, and somebody will buy it.

I like the period-correct colors on this Mark. Back in the day when one had a choice beyond black, dark gray, not quite as dark gray, a little lighter gray…. you get the idea.

Back when cars came in a wide range of colors. Nice!

My dad had one of these, white with wire wheels. White seats and red carpet, dash etc. It was like driving on air, and the gas mileage was horrible. It had the 460 and it was slow.

I’m seeing a wide range of prices for similar cars as I scroll through eBay, high and low, but there’s something about this particular car that just jumps out. Love that color! And with the mileage and condition, maybe the seller will get his asking price, or close. I liked the Mark V when they were new and I was much younger, and still do. Not many of these still driving around, at least not in my neck of the woods!

Base optioned Mark V with the base leather interior, no sunroof, hubcaps and full vinyl top. They didn’t git much cheaper than this one when new!

Ironically I am trying to buy a 78 Mark V in the similar Crystal Apricot color as speak that exterior wise and interior wise is almost exactly the same with the exception that the car above has the power vent window option. The one I am trying to buy does not even have that!

Good call… I used to work on those “power mini vent windows” back in the day. They were a constant problem and always in need of repair. Avoid them.

Later 77s had the vent window. I didn’t have a vent window either, but mine was fully loaded, this has the 460 tho.

Back in the day, about 30 years ago, I owned a Mark 4 and after a few too many vodka’s I drove it home, swung right into my driveway, but instead of parking it I decided to take it down to the back garden via the side of the garage and the perimmiter wall, which I had never done before other than with my 1934 Austin Ten. I then parked it under the trees in the back garden to keep it cool. Next morning I only managed to drive it to the entrance to the driveway before I had to get my son and my wife to guide me through the gaps between the garage and the wall as there was only about 2″ clearance on each side! Ever since that day if I ever drink, knowing that I have to drive, I only have ONE to be sociable. If ever a lesson was learned about driving while under the influence without dire consequences than this was it.

I always wanted to turn one of these into a Ute and lift it just a little and install all terrain tires. Just to be different!

Seller spent more time typing his “Rules” of what ya can do and can’t do than they did describing the car they have for sale!

At $16K for a BIN you expect a LOT more description and LOT LESS BS!
