Bought and Parked: 1969 Jeep Wagoneer

Disclosure: This site may receive compensation from some link clicks and purchases.

This 1969 Jeep Wagoneer might be familiar to some of you if it was on your list to bid on back in 2017. That’s because it’s the same truck that appeared in a Bring A Trailer listing and apparently hasn’t been touched since the current owner brought it home. The Jeep comes with a heavy dose of patina and looks fairly solid overall, and the seller confirmed the rebuilt engine does still fire up. Apparently, the current owner passed away not long after buying it off of Bring A Trailer and the project never got started. Find it here on craigslist for $7,000.

Thanks to Barn Finds reader T.J. for the find. The Jeep’s previous listing in 2017 can be found here on Bring A Trailer, which confirms it resided in Texas before making the trip to Easton, Maryland. The selling price then was $5,100 and that honestly seems like a great deal by today’s standards; it also reminds us that at one time, you really could find some great deals on BaT (no longer.) The interior is well-preserved and the painted surfaces confirms that the weathered exterior paint is likely original to the truck or at least the correct color scheme. The seller is responsible for settling the estate of the last listed owner, so he doesn’t have much information beyond what was in the original listing.

Supposedly, the 350ci Buick V8 was rebuilt in 2015, although no documentation accompanies the truck to confirm this important investment. The seller notes that while it did fire up with relative ease after its prolonged stay in storage, the truck will quit running after a few minutes and he suspects it’s due to sludge or gunk in the tank. If the Jeep was stored with fuel in the tank, this is entirely possible. Still, knowing a rebuilt engine still fires up is a good sign, and a simple tank clean out and reseal will hopefully allow this sleeping Jeep to run reliably once again.

It seems to me there’s no greater argument for diving into your projects as soon as money and time allow, as this sort of thing can happen without much warning. The Jeep looks like a great foundation for a simple restoration and given the deceased owner paid to ship it from Texas to Maryland, there were likely big plans for this survivor 4×4 to be a beach cruiser or farm accessory.  The original BaT listing noted that the Jeep had only racked up 150 miles in two years of ownership, and after this latest spell of inactivity, it’s time to get this Wagoneer back on the road.

We need to call a spade a spade here. This Jeep doesn’t have a heavy dose of patina, it’s got a heavy dose of cancer. The condition of the tailgate is a good indicator. It it’s rusted through there, it’s rusted through everywhere including places you can’t readily see. This vehicle is going to need a ton of body work, and frankly I would only buy it as a source of parts.

The license bracket is rusty and there seems to be some rust [surface maybe] along the top right where the glass is? I do not see any holes

I don’t see rust through in the supplied photos. This jeep is perfectly good as it is. Just address the fuel system as mentioned, give it the usual maintenance, and drive.

HOLD UP! I looked at BAT pics, and yes, it’s severely rotted.

Definitely needs body work around the rear wheel wells and the floorboards. Other than that, Wonder what type of trailer it hauled, RV, perhaps? Otherwise, I’d drive it!
