Breezeway Duo: Pair of 1963 Mercury Montereys

Disclosure: This site may receive compensation from some link clicks and purchases.

The “Breezeway” roof was a styling and convenience fixture on Mercury and Lincoln automobiles between 1957 and 1968. Available on sedans and hardtops, the Breezeway was a reverse-slanted rear window that would go up and down to provide greater ventilation. The seller has a pair of these cars bearing Mercury Monterey badging from 1963 (not 1960 as the seller says) and both have been sitting out in a field for ages. Available in Walla Walla, Washington, and here on craigslist, interested parties are invited to make an offer to take both of them away. “Curvette” deserves another kudo for this tip!

Mercury debuted the Breezeway on the 1957-58 Turnpike Cruiser, then bestowed it upon Lincoln for the 1958-60 Continentals. After a brief pause, the Breezeway returned to Mercury on its full-size products from 1963 to 1968 and then it was retired forever. Apparently, the rising in the sale of factory air conditioning relegated the Breezeway to the obsolete list. In all cases, the rear window could be operated electronically.

Both of the seller’s Mercs seem to be Monterey 4-door sedans from 1963. In “regular” trim, 18,000 or so copies were built. Add another 39,500 with Custom badging. We’re told that the seller’s grandfather bought the black one (formerly white?) when it was new and his son added the other one later for parts (whether any pieces were ever lifted it is unknown). Years later the cars found their way to the seller’s property and have sat there ever since.

The seller indicates that these cars are from 1960, but the photos say otherwise (1963). Hopefully, the titles will reflect the correct model years. We suspect that neither of the cars will run without significant effort, nor do we know what may be missing from each vehicle. 390 cubic inch V8s with automatic transmissions would be likely. We don’t know what either interior looks like. With too many other projects floating around, the seller isn’t going to do anything with either car. What would you pay for the pair?

Wad ’em up. Frames gotta be shot, engines seized, rodent hotels for decades. Nothing to see here. And I’m a Ford guy…

I watch VGG almost every week. Except when he gets on his Chevy square body Jones. I don’t even think Derrick would be interested in these.

I see a lot of great PARTS, for other cars to live on, if it came to that. But, I suspect that it might not be so doom and gloom since they’re in the PNW.

whos old enough to remember when kids riding in the back seat would crawl out threw the rear window and wind up on the trunk lid while mom was going to the store, she would look in the mirror and have a heart attack.

IF, the frame is good on one. THEN, that one would make a great demo derby car! I always thought that the “breezeway” concept was cool. (Pun unindended) The only reason I like sun roofs is for the ventilation benefit of tilting up the rear of the sun roof. (All roof or no roof for me. No halfway roof thank you!.) But these cars “to me” have always been ugly. Even as a little guy. Having never ridden in one of these, I would think that air spilling over the top of the roof would curl over and into the back windows area. But maybe the exaggerated roof lip stopped that from happening. Cool concept, ugly design!.

$250-$300+/- each in scrap metal might be able to get $150+/- for the engine if they run and transmission each can’t remember if these had the desirable 9 inch rear diff. So the potential to make some money is there if you are inclined to go get them

No floors in those babies. Maybe no frames either, as has been said.

Am I the only one surprised at the lack of visible rust on both of these? You may be surprised one direction or the other if you got one lifted. I am sure the guy has a tractor, or some implement you could drag one out with.

The frames on these had a propensity to rot. I don’t think sitting in a field for Lord knows how long, could help that situation.

Dad bought a ’64 Merc Park Lane with the breezeway window for $50 back in ’74. Drove it until it needed a transmission, then sold it to a local racer who stripped it down and raced the local 1/4 mile dirt tracks with it for a season…the 390 would outrun the small blocks!
