British Muscle Car: 1974 Jensen Interceptor

1974 Jensen Interceptor

I received an email from Reader Alan F about a Jensen Interceptor and he proposed that it is the perfect compromise for my taste and his. He knows I like oddballs and he likes muscle cars, so the Interceptor seems like the perfect car to meet both of our interests. I have to agree with him, the Interceptor is a bit of an oddball muscle car! It is a British touring car, with a big American V8 under the hood. This example is claimed to be highly original and only needs a little work to be a solid driver. The seller isn’t sure what exactly it’s worth, so they are offering it here on eBay without a reserve. So does the 440 V8, Italian styling, and British heritage add up to be the perfect car for you? Special thanks to Alan for pointing it out!

That car reminds me of a Studebaker Avanti.

Would be really hard to get a wrench in that engine bay.

This has always been and will remain one of my favorite cars so my bias is concrete. That being said I know they were poorly made on the whole and take a watchmaker’s skill to keep on the road… but love is love. I owned an Alfa GTV for years that gave me fits but always had a back up car. It’s a sickness.

Interior’s a little rough, but a nice example nonetheless. Always liked these – cool design, reliable mechanicals. Great color on this one.

Really thinking about getting one of these for my next project. Always loved these.

Looks like an electrical nightmare. Nice cars when new.

Wow! I agree, thanks for pointing that out. Looks like a heck of a solid truck!

Always thought these were cool cars . Muscular look with American V-8 muscle . Never see any around my way .

Oned a 71 Interceptor for several years, and several tears. It is a great car when the stars align. Tons of tire burning torque, Chrysler engine and transmission are bulletproof. Beautiful attention grabbing car as well. Here’s where the tears start- God forbid if anything like the ignition switch goes out. These cars were wired with Lucas electronics, also known as “The Prince of Darkness “. Glitches everywhere! Also one must be aware of the scarcity of parts. They are often nonexistent, and when they are found they are very expensive. Kept it in front of my house in So Cal so when it didn’t run me and passers by could still enjoy it. Good thing there are a lot of Jensen clubs around for support and assistance. For an example of the price of parts just Google Jensen Rear Bumper “NOS” or Jensen Grille “NOS”. These parts largely come from stored parts at the old Jenson factory in West Bromich, England, so let’s not forget shipping charges.

The Jensen interceptor is a brilliant car but personally I prefer the Triumph Stag.

      By brilliant ,you mean shiny,right?

I bought a 1974 Interceptor a few years back, having wanted one since I first saw one in London in the late 1960s. It is a great car but the electrics are problematic, in part because the wiring in the engine bay gets very brittle in the heat generated by a 440 V8 shoehorned into a small space. However, it is a great looking car as a lady told me when she saw it in the supermarket car park yesterday.
