We rarely feature late-model cars on this site, and there’s good reason for that: many of them haven’t yet attained collector status, and it will be some time before they do. But every now and again, you see the future unfold in real time, especially with chronically undervalued cars like the 996 generation of the Porsche 911. Like all 911 Turbos, the 996 chassis cars are enjoying a sudden jolt in value, and one that was long overdue. Find this low-mileage 2001 911 Turbo listed here on Craigslist for $98,000.

With just 44,800 KMs on the clock (this is a Canadian-market car), it has about 28,000 original miles. The seller reports it is stock, but there are some small modifications like the “S” badge and aftermarket wheels; fortunately, the badge can be removed, and the factory wheels are included. The 996 Turbo is powered by a legendary “Mezger” flat-six engine, which earned its status as a holy grail motor after years of proven performance under grueling motorsports conditions. A true dry-sump system, individual cylinder liners, and a lineage that goes back to the Mezger-powered 962 and 911 GT1 competition cars all contribute to its bulletproof reputation.

As someone who owns a 2001 911 Turbo, I can tell you the other highlight is the abundance of components shared with the run-of-the-mill 996 and Boxster. Sure, it’s somewhat cheap and scratches easily, but replacement parts are easy to find almost anywhere. Like any Turbo, you don’t want to grenade the engine or transmission, but for trim bits and cosmetic pieces, there are endless 996-era cars to pillage from. My 911 shows much higher mileage and needs some love in the suspension department, but it’s still a brilliant machine.

The engine is really the reason for all the newfound excitement. Drivers report they can clear 200,000 miles with basic maintenance. Tom Thalmann, a Rhode Island Porsche enthusiast, has a goal of taking his 2003 011 Turbo to one million miles, an achievement he’s already well on his way to eclipsing with over 700,000 miles on the clock. With 415 horsepower and 415 lb-ft of torque, it’s a treat to drive often, and while the example shown here will likely always have under 50,000 miles on it, it will still be appreciating quickly for the foreseeable future.
