Cheap Wheels: 1995 Ford Thunderbird

Disclosure: This site may receive compensation from some link clicks and purchases.

Ford’s Thunderbird was in the mix from 1955 to 1997 and again from 2002 to 2005. It began as a 2-seater and ended as one, with seating for a least four in between. The seller’s nice survivor is from the vehicle’s 10th generation, the last before the 2-seaters would return. We’re told it’s a solid driver at 90,000 miles and may not need any mechanical or cosmetic TLC. Located southwest of Denver, Colorado, this T-Bird is in cheap wheels territory at $3,500 here on craigslist. An attaboy goes to Mike F. for the tip!

In 1989, Ford’s Thunderbird (and Mercury’s Cougar) had a growth spurt, gaining nine inches in the wheelbase (largely benefitting the passengers). They were built on FOMOCO’s new MN12 North American Project 12 platform for mid-size cars. Thanks to a new 4-wheel independence suspension, the handling of these cars improved nicely. Later in the run, the vehicles were powered by Ford’s new 4.6-liter OHC V8 (about 280 cubic inches). With an automatic tranny, we’re told this set-up gets the job done.

From what we can tell, the body, paint, and interior all seem to be in good shape with no immediate needs. Except maybe the front seats which have some labored and stretched covers over them. It’s one of more than 73,000 T-Birds built in 1995, meaning that the demand for the long-lived car was still strong.

Everything is said to work, including the sunroof. It has a clean emissions test, which I assume is a selling point within Colorado. The car sports new tires and we’re told it has “ready new plates,” but I don’t know what that means. For the money, is this car a bargain?

Loved my ’95. It was that luscious pearlescent white. Bought it in 2004 with 108,000+ miles on it. Whole family drove the wheels off of it — was probably in excess of 230,000+ miles on odometer when we sold it. Saw it occasionally on the roads for a couple years after that, too. Alas, it succumbed to the ravages of harsh winters and road salt.
