2001 was the end of the road for the legendary Jeep Cherokee XJ. After 18 model years and nearly 3 million built, this iconic and popular SUV (which was introduced in 1984 before people started using the term “SUV”) was replaced by the Jeep Liberty. Although known for off-road capabilities, this well-preserved, one owner, low-mileage 2001 Jeep Cherokee Limited 4×4 looks like it has spent most of the past 22 years on – not off – the road and also in a garage. It’s about as clean and nice of a surviving example as you’ll see, and another other plus is that it’s been California owned since new. It still calls the Golden State home (Woodland Hills to be exact) and is for sale here on eBay. As I’m writing this, there have been 11 bids on this Jeep Cherokee Limited with a current top bid of $13,900.
The photos provided were taken on a rather gray and ominous-looking cloudy day (but with scenic mountains in the background), so the detail isn’t the best, but you can see enough to tell this top-of-the-line Limited 4×4 is a really clean Jeep. The exterior is impressive and its Sienna Red Pearl paint is described as “good overall with the exception of minor imperfections to be expected of a 22-year-old vehicle.” All of the exterior trim, moldings, bumpers, and wheels look very good, the undercarriage is clean, and it’s obvious that this Jeep has been garage kept since new. The seller states that no modifications have been made other than a Warn XD9000i winch which is fully functional.
Inside, the Jeep is as clean and immaculate as the exterior. Being the Limited package, it is equipped with dual power front seats, power windows, door locks and mirrors, air conditioning, cruise control, an AM/FM radio with cassette player and six Jensen AccuSound speakers, remote keyless entry, an overhead console and more. The seller states that everything has been checked and is working properly. The tan vinyl and patterned cloth bucket seats show no wear or tears, all the trim pieces and panels are there and not damaged, and the black steering wheel, instrument panel, and dash appear to be in great shape.
Ditto to the back seat area as well. There’s no visible wear on the rear bench seat and the carpet and matching carpeted floor mats look very good and clean. There’s also a photo of the tidy cargo area showing clean carpet on the floor and back of the rear seat plus a matching spare tire cover. About the only noticeable wear is some cargo hauling scratches on the plastic lift gate sill.
In the spotless engine bay you’ll find Jeep’s extremely reliable 4.0 L inline-six engine (I can attest to its reliability as my wife has owned two Jeeps with this power plant). It has only 79,397 original miles on the clock and it’s paired with a floor-shifter automatic transmission. The seller says it “runs and drives beautifully, the 4.0 L engine runs very strong and smoothly, the transmission shifts crisply, and the four-wheel-drive engages properly.” The seller also shares that this Jeep has the Up-Country Suspension package and the Trailer Towing package and goes on to explain that “the Up-Country suspension package consists of taller springs, a limited-slip rear differential, skid plates and tow hooks. The Trailer Towing package includes upgraded engine cooling, a tow hitch and a 5,000-pound tow rating rather than the 3,500 of the non optioned XJ Cherokee.” So what do you think? Since my wife owned one of these now-iconic SUV’s, I still notice them on the road. They’re in all kinds of conditions and stages of modification, but I haven’t seen one quite as clean and well-preserved as this one.
It’s a nice used vehicle, and that’s about it.
You do NOT put a heavy-duty truck winch on those things! They’re unit-body!
They’re up to off-roading, yes. No one expected that; it turned out that AMC was able to make such a rig strong enough…but a winch? Not JUST a winch, but one powerful enough to pull a frame-based truck out of sloppy mud?
Okay. Try it if you will. My suspicions are, the seller put it on to aid in the sale.
First off, this is a clean truck.I have a 2001 Cherokee limited. This vehicle is not highly optioned. It states it has power seats, there are no switches in the seats . It’s also states It has six speakers, it doesn’t have the optional infinity sound system, which would have tweeters in the upper door . I don’t see any skid plates from the pics. The plastic dust cover under the engine is not a skid plate. The up country pkg is aftermarket not factory. It also doesn’t have heated leather seats. My option sheet on my truck has three pages of options. This is a nice truck but need to be more truthful in the ad.
Look a the Flee bay pics it has gas tank skid plate and what factory considered a transfer case skid plate,I own a 01 60th anniversary with 340k I know XJs pretty good.
You can never have too big of a winch!
Still makes me sad that AMC succumbed to the failed Renault alliance. That XJ design came from such alliance and if AMC could have held on or received help to save the company they would have finally flourished with the Jeep brand. It always seems to come down to bad timing. As far as the winch is concerned the XJ might be unibody but anyone who has owned one has never thought of it being a hindrance. The crap people have put these through has proved its strength.
FWIW…AMC could never have created the XJ without Renault money.
The unit-body know-how and the refinement of the various drivetrain components, were all from AMC’s own experience; but the money to make it happen, was from France.
Sad, really. Imagine if Studebaker had found a sponsor, and management willing to push forward.m Same likely result.
Yes that was the point in my mind I failed to articulate. I believe it was the assignation of the president of Renault that brought the AMC merger to a halt. Yes Renault was the cash infusion needed to develop the XJ project that unfortunately did not benefit AMC but Chrysler. Lee was a savvy guy and he knew Jeep would be a winner for the Chrysler corporation.
I’d ditch the winch, ruins the look of the vehicle , way too much over kill.

Ive owned one of these, and many other vehicles and my 01 Cherokee Sport was one of the best vehicles ive owned. The seats/ergonomics, the performance, the build quality, the gas milage, and made in USA.
If you have the money, you wont be disappointed, these Jeeps are bang for the buck. Better quality than the Liberty and most others that came after them.
Jeep is now a foreign company, and ironically they are in fashion with females. Had the fashion only been sooner maybe Jeep would still be a US owned company.
Nothing a US flag sticker wont fix 🙄
These XJ’s are legendary. Their value will follow the path of the early Broncos.
I have owned a ‘93 for over 20 years and sold it rusty but great running 250,000 miles.
I daily drive a ‘99 that I have owned over 20 years as well with 121,000 and runs perfect. It has needed to repair work in those miles except for maintenance items.
I had a 1997 with 13,000 original miles that I couldn’t bare to drive so I sold it last year.
I have a 2001XJ that I only use during the spring and summer months and it has 79,000 miles. These are the best vehicles on the road today.
Get your now as they are going up in price.
The ZJ was also a great rig. I had a 95 with the 4.0 and it served me well.
Yes, they are unibody, but I’ve spent a lot of time under the one my ex-wife owned and another my son now owns and they are incredibly overbuilt, I wouldn’t worry about that winch as long as you use some common sense with it.
Front axle shaft ujoint problems after 100k miles. Once rust starts, dump it.
Some older Jeeps have a 60 mph wobble, which you have slow down before it goes away. Tires, balancing, and new front end parts didn’t solve it on my 2 Cherokees. May not happen on all Cherokees.
Cherokees can stay on the road for 250k miles. Engine, transportation and rear-end are bullet proof.
You joints are easy to replace ,if don’t want to tackle that you can but Crown brand complete axles.
2 words, steering stabilizer.
I’m a journeyman mechanic.
I just want to drive not fix.
I did my own ujoints and also bearing hubs. There’s no profit in doing it multiple times.
Yes, I did stabilizers first.
I’ve owned 3 of the XJ 4×4 Jeeps. Plainly a superior running and handling vehicle. Turning radius will spoil you, parking a breeze and tight dimensions allow you to park where many can’t fit. Sits nice and high for road travel. Acceleration at higher speeds is exceptional. Love the the drive train of this 4.0 L, over 200,000 on 2 that I still own. One is a 5 speed manual transmission and a blast to drive, but highway travel it becomes tedious and of course lacks overdrive. I can say nothing bad about this vehicle, it’s almost sexy, no surprise about the popularity.
