Clean Californian: 1972 Buick Skylark

Disclosure: This site may receive compensation from some link clicks and purchases.

A vehicle doesn’t necessarily have to be a fire-breathing monster or ultra-rare to be considered to be a classic. Cars like this 1972 Buick Skylark would undoubtedly qualify. It is a car that possesses style and presence, and its condition is sure to attract plenty of admiring glances and comments wherever it goes. Where it is ready to go now is to a new owner’s driveway. The Buick is located in Chatsworth, California, and has been listed for sale here on Craigslist. If you want to park this classic in your driveway, then all you need to do is hand the owner $15,950, and this could be yours. I have to say thank you to Barn Finder MattR for referring the Buick to us.

The Skylark is finished in Arctic White with a Dark Green vinyl top. The paint shines beautifully, and there are no visible issues with the vinyl top. The panels are extremely straight, while the gaps appear to be tight and consistent. The owner describes the Buick as being solid and rust-free. There are no apparent signs of external rust problems. The owner supplies a single shot of the vehicle’s underside, and it looks clean enough to eat off. The chrome, trim, and glass, all appear to be free from apparent damage or problems. The aftermarket wheels and new tires are a recent fit to the Skylark. They suit the car’s styling well. However, for those who seek a stock appearance, it would be interesting to know if the owner has retained the original wheels and trims.

The buyer of this Skylark is not going to have to put their hand deep into their pocket to whip the interior into shape. It presents exceptionally well, with no significant problems or issues. It is hard to tell, but the carpet might be slightly faded. If it is, then that isn’t a deal-breaker. A new carpet set can be yours for $205, which would add some freshness to the interior. I also noticed that the wheel has several cracks in it. This is a common fault, and the next owner might feel tempted to restore this themselves. It is possible to tackle this in a home workshop, but it just needs a bit of patience to achieve a good result. The original radio has been removed, and a CD player is fitted in its place. This will almost certainly mean that the dash will have been cut to install this, so I would be leaving that as it is.

This photo provides a perfect insight into the condition of the Buick’s upholstery. Its condition is impressive, with no signs of any rips, tears, or stains. The door and rear trims are in a similar state, while journeys inside the Buick are made comfortable by the inclusion of ice-cold air conditioning.

This Skylark isn’t a fire-breathing monster. That doesn’t mean that it is a slug, either. Under the hood, we find a 350ci V8, producing 150hp. This is backed by a 3-speed Hydramatic transmission, while driving chores should be easy thanks to the inclusion of power steering and power brakes. This is not a car that will get your pulse racing down the ¼ mile. That journey will take a relatively leisurely 18.2 seconds. That’s not lightning-fast, but it is still respectable. The owner claims that the Skylark has a genuine 101,000 miles showing on its odometer. He doesn’t indicate whether he holds evidence to back this claim, but the Buick’s overall condition makes it seem plausible. There is some evidence of accumulated grime in a few spots, but overall, the engine bay presents respectably. This isn’t merely about appearance, because the owner states that this classic drives very well.

This 1972 Buick Skylark is a rust-free survivor that holds the promise of years of reliable motoring from a bullet-proof drivetrain. You won’t see many examples as nice as this one in your day-to-day travels. It will definitely attract plenty of attention wherever it goes and should receive more than its share of positive comments. It is ready to be driven and appreciated by a new owner, and that has to make it an attractive proposition for the right person. I wonder if that person will be one of our faithful readers.

Nice car. Today, all we see at auctions today are fire breathing motors and 4 speeds ( every freakin’ car has a 4 speed), and it just wasn’t so. 98% ( + or – x%) were regular cars, just like this. Everyday cars that never went near a drag strip. I felt Skylark was the nicest of all these types, and the wheels , even better. Here’s a car worth every penny they’re asking.

Here, here! Your are a wise man, my feelings exactly. A truly beautiful car. Nice to see cars like most of us had treated this way. This will get more thumbs up at a show then any crazy muscle car.

Howard, you are spot on. I was just on another site where multiple Corvettes are listed for sale and apparently no Corvette was ever built with an automatic and ALL of them came with multiple carburation.

Nice Skylark. Unfortunate upholstery choice. I am fairly well versed in these, have never seen a plaid interior such as this from the factory on them.

If this is the case, then someone in more modern times actually contemplated and selected this fabric. TEHO I suppose.

…..Yeah I’ll agree with the upholstery being an strange choice, another couple things of note, front bumper appears to be off of a 71 as it seems it’s missing its factory rubber trim, and the bumper is pushing up a bit, (check for signs of front end damage), also steering wheel is off of a 70. as good as it looks from afar, a closer inspection would be in order imo, as a Buick fan I’ve seen my share of the 70 – 72’s pieced together. if all checks out, decent little Skylark….

I had a 72 Skylark with the exact same steering wheel. The interior is definitely not OME. The bummer with my 72 was nine inch drum brake on the front. Brake job every year

If you’ll look closely, the front bumper does have the rubber strip on it. The passenger side is apparently broken of at the corner, but the driver’s side goes all the way around. Also, I believe that you’re in error regarding the bumber being pushed up. For proof of this, notice where the bumper wraps around and meets the body…..the space there is equi-distant, showing the bumper is in it’s place. I’ve got one of these 72 Skylarks in white, with no vinyl top, and have had it since 97…..great car….

I guess hidden wipers, like on 70’s camaros, were optional.
I find it hard to believe those are factory seat patterns,
Would it be worth it to convert it to a GSX clone, for big return on the dollar?

Why convert it? I’d leave it as-is.
The only thing I don’t care for is the moulding
on the sides.Ruins the super clean look.
One of the few cars that the black vinyl
roof balances out the white paint.

I believe it has the wrong wiper motor set up or the wiper recess mechanism has stopped working.

Some weeks there’s not a lot of cars on B.F., that really interest me enough to make a comment and this was one of those weeks. There were a lot of nice cars and generated interest with some of the regular commenters, but for me not so much. Now this Buick, although a very mundane variety does peek my interest a bit. For one it appears to be very clean, and for another it’s American iron. I appreciate that a lot of readers on this site are from Europe and Australia and for that reason their interest will be more toward other models than my own. That is one of the reasons this is such a great site, varied opinions, likes and dislikes. Keep up the good work providing us readers with great articles to comment on and or bid on.
    God bless America

My first car was a 72 Skylark with the 350 4 barrel. It was old when I got it with the floor boards rusted out and the interior rotting around the leaky back window. It was freedom and with little 14″ wheels and no weight in the back, I was driving before drifting was cool.

I do miss that car sometimes.

I like it, upholstery and all! About the only things I would do is add dual exhausts, a factory style gauge setup and a factory style radio, updated to modern internals, and maybe a factory type 3 spoke steering wheel. This is a perfect cruise night car!

Good looking ‘lark. I’d advise a very careful inspection around the rear window. Ditto along the bottom of the windscreen. I’ve just spend a small fortune having that fixed on mine

Great looking car and I was also quite surprised to see the green dash and seats with the cowboy plaid interior!! I think in my opinion it would be much more desirable being a white car with black interior!!!

My mom would have done that to her 67 and 68 Skylark’s gut back in the day and would have loved the green. To me, that is an expensive upgrade/downgrade one shouldn’t have to rectify to enjoy this car in 2020. Also, I agree about the front bumper…not the ends but the very center along with the tip of the hood both look like they are curling ever so slightly toward each other.

These bumpers pushed up in the middle like that when they had been on a sling of a tow truck. Ask me how I know lol.
The wipers are stock like that, as is the steering wheel. A more “deluxe” Skylark would have had the recessed wipers and the more common Buick steering wheel. This is just a low level stripper car that has a vinyl top. Nice car, fairly priced. I have always been a fan of these.
