Clean Survivor: 1985 Chevrolet Monte Carlo SS

Badge revivals are nothing new in the automotive world. Chevrolet followed the practice in 1983 when it reintroduced the SS badge to the Monte Carlo range after a twelve-year absence. Our featured SS rolled off the line in 1985 and is described by the seller as “super clean.” Their photos support that claim and also indicate that this survivor is rust-free. Chevrolet produced its Fourth Generation Monte Carlo range from 1981 until 1988, before the badge took a seven-year break. The SS joined the party in 1983, and remained available for the remainder of this generation’s production run. This SS rolled off the line in 1985, ordered by its first owner in Black, which was a new shade for that model year. The car presents impressively for what is claimed to be a survivor with almost 100,000 miles on the clock. The paint holds a wonderful depth of color and shine, and there appear to be no panel bumps or bruises. The seller supplies a couple of underside shots, revealing no evidence of rust. The plastic doesn’t look cracked or brittle, and the decals are crisp. Add stain-free alloy wheels and clear glass to the equation, and we’re off to a flying start.

Chevrolet’s 305ci V8 probably won’t make a Top Ten list of America’s greatest production engines, but in “HO” form, it wasn’t a bad motor in a 1985 context. That year’s Sales Brochure quotes power and torque figures of 180hp and 235 ft/lbs, providing a useful performance gain over the “standard” 305. That is what hides beneath this Monte Carlo’s hood, while the SS also received the four-speed 200-4R automatic transmission, power steering, and power brakes. The seller states that they recently rebuilt the transmission and replaced the shocks, springs, tires, and battery before fitting adjustable rear control arms. They completed the process with a wheel alignment, so this beauty should track straight and true. The motor runs perfectly, and potential buyers can consider it a turnkey proposition.

The interior images, although not the most detailed, reveal one of this Monte Carlo’s few genuine weaknesses. It appears that someone has replaced the factory stereo, and the new unit is missing its control knobs. Purists will probably scour the usual online auction sites for a replacement to return the inside of this classic to its factory form. Otherwise, the presentation is extremely tidy. Trimmed in a combination of Gray vinyl and cloth, the seats and other upholstered surfaces are free from physical damage. The carpet has developed the typical dirty appearance on the outer edges, but spending $225 on a replacement carpet set would eliminate the problem if it proves beyond a deep clean. The dash and pad are excellent, as is the tilt wheel. Creature comforts include air conditioning, power windows, power locks, and cruise control.

I’ve always liked the styling of vehicles from the 1980s. I admit that they aren’t always aerodynamically efficient, but they typically look bold and aggressive. This 1985 Chevrolet Monte Carlo SS perfectly demonstrates that, with the paint shade emphasizing the impression. It is remarkably clean for a survivor of this vintage, suggesting it has been somebody’s pride and joy. Finding these classics so unmolested is a relatively rare treat, and recent successful sales results suggest that the seller’s price is realistic. The only thing I would change if I became the new owner would be to source the correct stereo to return the interior to its original state. Otherwise, this SS needs nothing but a new home.
