Crusty Barn Find: 1971 Pontiac LeMans Sport

Disclosure: This site may receive compensation from some link clicks and purchases.

Both the LeMans and GTO were big mid-size sellers for Pontiac in the late 1960s. So, the GM division went one step further by creating the LeMans Sport in 1970-72, something of a cross between the two. It came with a V8 engine and the GTO’s interior, but it didn’t scare insurance companies when it came to writing new policies. This 1971 edition has been sitting for ages, will run off of a gas can, and has gobs of corrosion. Located in State Road (aka Thurmond), North Carolina, this ambitious project has a starting bid of $2,750 here on eBay with no takers thus far.

The LeMans Sport was a series of its own for two years and was an option in the third. It looked much like a regular LeMans but with a little more bling. To us onlookers 55 years later, you have to wonder if there was a need for this third model as you could start checking boxes on the dealer order form and get almost to the same point with an ordinary LeMans. In 1971, Pontiac built 34,625 hardtops like the seller’s car.

We’re told this 73,000-mile Pontiac has been inactive since 1992. The seller managed to get it running again thanks to a rebuilt carburetor and a new fuel pump (the car runs off an external fuel source). That indicates the gas tank needs cleaning or replacing (probably the latter, given how crusty this Pontiac is). However, the brakes are non-op, so even driving it around the yard isn’t a good idea.

Everywhere you look, you’ll find rust, especially where a vinyl top once lived in better days. The seller even admits this vehicle may serve better as a parts car. The interior is quite dirty, and the worn carpeting is probably concealing soft floorboards. There is no title as it was lost years ago. The seller would rather let it go as a full vehicle rather than parting it out, which he/she does not want to do. Thanks for another 1970s tip, Mitchell G.!

I think a tow truck might be afraid to pick this thing up. but then again, if it starts to fold in half, you can cart it out in a pickup double stacked! LOL!
As Steve says, it’s a parts car & that’s it.

This is a parts car. The sellers description is basically a list of usable parts. He’s not wrong, it’s a complete car, with plenty of desirable options. If anyone has gone through a restoration and priced components such as bucket seat cores, console, shifter, wiring harness, floor shift steering column, disc brakes, AC (especially the under dash components), then there are all the small, $20-50 parts that nickel and dime owners to death. This will likely be a good deal for someone restoring a 70-72 GTO or LeMans.

I agree with Steve R. It’s a complete car and has a lot of parts that can be used on another project car even for little things that are hard to get or find. I have 1971 that I restored in the mid 1990s and still have it with saved prts over the years. My Dad has a 1970 Pontiac le mans sport with a 1971 front clip on it and would be happy to have this car for parts!

The wheels are probably the best parts but there are lots of other parts that could be used as parts like Steve said those little parts are what nickles and fines you to abandoning a resto or rebuild
