Factory 396 V8! 1966 Chevrolet Impala SS

Disclosure: This site may receive compensation from some link clicks and purchases.

Chevrolet expanded the Impala line-up in 1961 with the Super Sport option, which added some pizzazz to the company’s best-selling car line. It became so successful that it was promoted to series status in 1964. Throughout most of the Super Sport’s reign (through 1969), you could get almost any drivetrain combination under the hood. This 1966 edition has a 396 Turbo-Jet V8 and a Turbo-Hydramatic V8, but the car doesn’t run and has a lot of corrosion issues. From Vancouver, Washington, this big-block car is available here on craigslist for $8,500 (make take offers). Another barn find brought to us by T.J.!

For the third year in a row, the Impala SS stood on its own in the Chevrolet portfolio. SS models would have slim profile “Strato” bucket seats in the front, along with other sporty trim both inside and outside of the vehicle. Even though Chevy delivered more than 119,000 Impala SS cars in 1966, that was off from the prior year. The luxury-oriented Caprice outsold the SS in its second year by more than 62,000 units. The SS would continue to draw fewer customers through its end in 1969.

The seller bought this car in the condition you see it from the original owner with 116,000 miles on the clock. It doesn’t run and we don’t know how long that has been the case. Under the hood resides the car’s factory 396 cubic inch V8 (325 ho) with a TH-400, floor-shifted, of course. We’re told this was a special-order car with the gauge cluster in front of the console, not in the dashboard. It also has a telescopic/tilt steering wheel, rare in 1966.

Rust may be the biggest headache. We’re told that all the floorboards and trunk are loaded with rust. And the exterior sheet metal doesn’t look better in many places. the rear bumper looks to be more rust than chrome. This will be a challenging project, but possibly worthwhile when finished because of the drivetrain.

There isn’t one thing on this car that doesn’t need to be repaired or replaced. God speed to whoever ends up with this.

I think this poor Impala has more to worry about than it’s rust. It’s simply finding a new home. Someone that will love it instead of buying it for nothing and trying to flip it.

Seems a large majority of people in America got bored and needed a bit of self gratification like a new house. A gas drinking SUV and or a Monster Diesel pickup complete with Bro wheels. Now those people are mighty extended with payments and whatever else they felt they needed.

Now more important issues to go along with the tanked economy and $6.00 and above fuel prices and no food in the stores. There is no money left to buy a dead car that needs everything including a frame.

Die in peace old road warrior.
