Fade to Black: Plum Crazy 1970 Dodge Charger R/T

Last week Adam Clarke published a write-up here on Barn Finds featuring a rare 1970 Charger recently found in Pennsylvania.  Still wearing its original “go mango” orange paint, that Charger came with the highly desirable 4-speed 440 “Six Pack” and ended up selling for just under $47,000 on eBay.  Not very many of us can afford to drop 47 large on a car and unfortunately, the chance to win $1.6 billion in the Mega Millions drawing has passed.  But for anyone still hoping to get in on some Mopar muscle at a lower price, perhaps this Charger R/T, listed here on eBay in Chilliwack, British Columbia, is their chance?  Bidding is currently just over $12,000 with the reserve price not met.

The seller mentions the restoration process has already been started on the car and provides pictures showing much of the progress that’s been made, but no reason is given as to why the car is being offered for sale mid-resto.  The car is described as a “non-molested original” that is “complete” with nothing missing.  Despite being disassembled, “all parts are tagged and bagged.”  The seller also states the car has very little rust and photos of the body before work got started on the restoration certainly back that claim.  No photos of the frame are shown in the listing, however, the seller offers to give access to over 300 detailed pictures of the car to anyone willing to provide him with their email address.

The original “plum crazy” purple paint can be seen in this photo as well as the white bucket seats.  The seller points out that everything is original with this car “right down to the 8 track player.”  How cool is that?  I wonder if the stash of cassettes in the glove box comes with the sale?  Some vintage CCR or Three Dog Night, perhaps?

The original 440 looks well maintained in this photo although no mention is made of any work performed on the motor.  Perhaps it was removed from the car some time ago and stored?  Or maybe not since the seller lists mileage at a mere 45,000.  No wonder it’s in such clean condition.  Likely to be the recipient of a lot of comments here on Barnfinds, the 440 is paired with a 727 TorqueFlight automatic transmission.

I can’t say that I’m plum crazy about a purple car but I would hate to see this Charger restored to anything but its original color.  And what about the 727 auto?  Sure, a 4-speed “six-pack” might be the ideal combination to a lot of Mopar muscleheads, but as bidding keeps rising, opinions on the value of this solid, original, unmolested R/T will make for some interesting discussion.

Plum Crazy or not,I could care less what color it is if I could get my hands on my favorite Dodge Chargers (1968-70).

I won’t pay over 5,000. This car is going to require years of work and thousands of dollars to restore, bottom line …buy one thats in better shape and costs alittle more. If you have ever restored a car YOU know what I’m saying..Good luck.

Colors are so subjective, but High Impact on White is just my brand of beer.I’ve had a Petty Blue on White Superbird,Limelight /white GTX,and Plum Crazy /White Roadrunner, and still have a Moulin Rouge FM3 on White 70 Cuda. This Charger seems to have a lot going for it by way of colors, good sheet metal,RT option, and numbers motor. At 13 grand it is a little over half way there, being in Canada will hold it back, but no way this car sells for less than $20k.I also am in the Great White North, and might be on it myself if it were a 68.

I wonder how much heavier that “loop” bumper is over the ’68-69 ones. Could it be as heavy as most ’74 & later five mph bumpers?
There were of course some loop front bumpers on some imperials, later chargers, ’68-’72 gtos, & ’70-3 firebirds, the latter i know for sure being VERY heavy.
IMO, they should have retained the ’69 charger front bumper for ’70.

15 or 20 years ago, I decided to paint my Mountain Bike. I stripped it down and prepped and turned it over to my uncle. He had been in the car repair business all his life, and had a nice she’d out back that was a paint booth. I told him I wanted White fad to Purple. He went to his shelf and found the Plum Crazy. It was perfect.
