Fake Rust Movie Car: 1979 Plymouth Volare

Disclosure: This site may receive compensation from some link clicks and purchases.

Medium Cashmere Metallic isn’t a color we see too often on Volares, and it goes well with the “Premier woodgrain trim” (is this actual wood?!) (just kidding). The seller says this car has been used for movies and in dry storage for years. This 1979 Plymouth Volare Wagon is posted on craigslist in Langley, British Columbia, Canada, and they’re asking $6,500, or $4,663 U.S. dollars. Here is the original listing, and thanks to Curvette for the tip!

For a car that’s said to have been “always in dry storage,” it’s showing a lot of rust on the lower edges of the doors and rocker panel areas on both sides. Actually, the seller says that’s “Fauxtina,” as in, fake, painted rust! That makes the asking price much better, doesn’t it? I would want to paint over that fake rust, and that adds to the total cost of owning this Volare. Maybe I’d ask if Todd Fitch, master of all trades, could paint that for me.

The Plymouth Volare and Dodge Aspen were made from 1976 through 1980, and they offered a four-door sedan, two-door fastback coupe, and a four-door wagon. Being a fan of two-door notchback cars, a while ago I wondered what one of those might look like. Then just now, I wondered what a two-door wagon might look like. I know, I need a hobby. Here’s what the rear cargo space looks like. I wonder if any movie equipment was stored back there?

Speaking of movies, here is a list of some movies filmed in the area where this car is located. Was it in any of these flicks? The interior looks pretty nice, and it appears to have the Premier Interior Package with optional “Cashmere” velour 60/40 split-back front bench seating and a reclining passenger seat back.

Sadly, the seller didn’t take 1.4 seconds to pop the hood on this Volare and show us the 225-cu.in. OHV slant-six engine. Sigh. It would have had around 110 horsepower and 180 lb-ft of torque rolling through a TorqueFlite to the rear wheels. They say it “runs good,” has a rebuilt carb, and you can drive it home. This looks like a super nice example to me, even with the fake rust painted on the lower portions. Any thoughts on this Volare wagon?

Fake painted-on rust? I guess, another version of the infamous artificial “patina” we see on old trucks? Otherwise, a woodgrain Volare wagon in a loud mustard color in reasonable condition. With a slant six. Certainly something not commonly seen.

Scotty, I think your two-door notch chop looks a bit awkward, but the two-door wagon chop looks pretty good.

    Thanks Scotty.

I agree, all they needed to do was get it wet once or twice. Those cars rotted so badly it was as if they were made out of spackle.

The two-door notch side styling reminds me of the early 60’s Mopars which looked as though they were missing the back door, but the wagon is cool! GLWTS!! :-)

Let me get this right a rare non-rusty Volare that was made to look rusty? What has this hobby come to? And I agree, the 2 door wagon looks cool! Can I have one wirh the 4 speed overdrive transmission please?

I think the biggest problem is that the usual 4 door split in the quarter window is still there.

I don’t know why theres fake painted on rust. ( as most of us know, drive this car in a couple of bad winters and unfortunately you won’t need fake rust). It looks like its has early 70’s Plymouth wheel covers. I don’t ever remember seeing one this color. They always seemed to be beige, or green. The slant 6 will run forever and if you can keep the real rust at bay, you’ll have an old wagon that will run for years to come. I like that interior, sort of Chrysler Town and Country looking to me. And Scotty, I like that 2 door wagon, and, once again, you made something that looks like the manufacturer could’ve pulled off.

Thanks, Dave (and Bob, Moparman, and all)! I like the notchback body style, but you’re right about that particular two-door version. I’ll work on it a bit and maybe post another one of those.

Appears there was one like this used in the television series ‘Psych’ which claims to have been filmed in White Rock, BC. So near Langley, BC.

Interesting, I’ve never seen one of these with tilt wheel and velour seats.

    I gotta be honest here. Only because I bought a 78 new white woodgrain wagon with a 318. That’s why I clicked on it. Up comes Scotty’s name & the word Movie. I knew I wouldn’t be disappointed….& I wasn’t. πŸ˜‚

    β€œ…thoughts on this Volare…”
yeah owned a ’64 & ’66 wagon, drove the whole mopar wagon line for livery co
(dart, aspen, volare – all the mopars ’67 – ’89). Favs? motor: 225 (never owned 1); DL: the frnt wheel of course. Some kinda vehicle! Esp the million mi motors (slant6’s like the OM617, 300/4.9, wolwo, lincoln, etc). Watch ur rust, tho. Typical (or even worse) of the era.
    Thnx 4 listing, write-up, pic~

Fake rust is a new one. As others have said these needed no eencouragement. The corrosion was almost built in. I’m not spooked by color but wouldn’t want t to see this without the wood. My ’76 slant six was the little engine that could. Except accelerate or achieve any kind of mpg.

If the fake rust is really fake you won’t need to paint over it, just strip it off with acetone at most. Movie prop work isn’t known for permanence. But that makes you wonder why the seller didn’t do it.

The seller is a company that supplies movie cars. They are selling some old stock, likely not used much anymore. Just moving them on so not interested in prettying them up is my guess.

I agree the fake rust should polish off.

I suppose if you’re going to own a car with painted on rust that is going to be in TV/Movies, the location would be perfect. Scotty’s list from IMDB indicated that almost 600 different things have been filmed there, and that doesn’t include multiple episodes of the same show.
