The 1973 oil crisis forced many buyers to reevaluate their motoring choices, with a growing number turning their attention to more fuel-efficient vehicles. Even premium models like the Chevrolet Corvette weren’t immune, with sales of cars featuring a big-block under the hood falling dramatically in 1974. Our featured ‘Vette is one that slipped through the net and appears to be a prime restoration candidate. The seller has listed it here on eBay in Anderson, Indiana, with a BIN price of $6,500.

As in previous years, Chevrolet offered 1974 Corvette buyers a choice of ten paint shades. This car wears Classic White that shows its age. It has developed an overall matte finish, with visible scratches and chips. The bumper wears Grey primer, and a few badges have gone AWOL. However, the fiberglass looks quite promising, with no evidence of major cracks or other issues. Therefore, potential buyers contemplating a hands-on restoration might find this car’s lack of obvious major problems mighty tempting. The seller supplies a pair of underside shots, and while the frame has a couple of spots of surface corrosion, I see no evidence of penetrating rust. If the birdcage is as solid, this classic could be a winner. The glass is clear, but the Rally wheels can be added to the list of items requiring some fresh paint.

The 1974 model year marked a significant moment in the C3 Corvette’s production life. Few knew at the time, but Chevrolet had decided to discontinue the big-block engine option at the end of the year. That makes our featured car one of the last of its breed. The first owner teamed the 454ci V8 with a three-speed Turbo Hydramatic transmission, power steering, and power brakes to provide an effortless driving experience. The 454 may have suffered at the hands of evolving emissions regulations, but it still placed 270hp and 380 ft/lbs of torque at the driver’s disposal. It may no longer have been brutal, but it still delivered the goods off the line and when overtaking on the open road. You don’t need to be a rocket scientist to realize that this Corvette doesn’t run or drive. The motor is missing a few ancillary items, but the interior shots reveal a selection of parts on the seats and floors. It is unclear why someone dismantled things to this extent, and, with a lack of relevant information, potential buyers may choose to contact the seller to ask questions about the mechanical condition. For instance, it would be worth knowing whether the big-block turns freely or whether it is locked.

Trimmed in Saddle, this Corvette’s interior is a mixed bag. The carpet has gone, and the console is quite scratched and marked. The state of the passenger seatcover is unclear, but the leather on the driver’s seat looks like it would respond positively to a deep clean and a conditioner. The dash and pad look reasonable, but a few plastic items need replacement. It isn’t lavishly equipped, but it does feature power windows, a tilt/telescopic wheel, and an aftermarket radio/cassette player.

The 1974 model year marked another new sales record for the Chevrolet Corvette, with 37,502 buyers taking one home. Although that figure represented a major gain in the market, only 3,494 customers ordered one with a big-block under the hood. That equates to an almost 21% slump in one year, indicating how the oil crisis changed consumer attitudes. That trend is sad when you consider that this model year was the last when buyers could order a C3 Corvette with a big-block. The fact was that climbing fuel prices, increased insurance premiums, and falling sales volumes sounded the death knell for this motor. This Corvette needs plenty of TLC, but it shows promise, and the price is affordable. Are those thoughts enough to tempt you to pursue it further?

WARNINGWARNINGWARNINGWARNINGWARNINGWARNINGWARNINGWARNINGWARNINGWARNINGWARNINGWARNINGWARNINGWARNING. This Vette has the dreaded and loathed “Luggage Rack”. Regardless of the condition otherwise, rust, rot, etc. because of that fact alone, do not buy this car. Just imagine if it also came with fender skirts and a continental kit?
