Final Year Model: 2002 Volkswagen Cabrio GLX

The Volkswagen Cabriolet is one of the more instantly recognizable nameplates among the German automaker’s lineup, with the droptop Rabbit and Beetle long-time fixtures in the convertible marketplace. By the time the MKIV generation of VW’s lineup rolled out, the Cabriolet had become a thoroughly modernized offering, which was good news for sun seekers. The seller’s 2002 Cabrio GLX is a final year model that comes with a variety of appealing OEM features, and it’s listed here on eBay with bids to $3,050 and no reserve.

The early days of VW’s primary convertible model saw it based around the Rabbit model, which made it an instant favorite of the high school cheerleader and young hairdresser demographic. As the years wore on, the model began to mature into a vehicle that appealed to a far wider demographic, with the late 80s and early 90s generation winning favor among convertible shoppers for having room for four passengers and a sturdy roll bar for safety. The Cabriolet of the MK2 era also responded well to modifications, with many aftermarket parts from the Golf platform carrying over.

The seller’s car represents the era in which VW got serious about interior quality, becoming more Audi-like in its construction. High-quality materials around the dash area and switchgear make the MK3 and MKIV-era vehicles feel quite durable inside, not to mention the tactile sensation simply feeling far better than the low original purchase price would suggest. The seller’s car features details tied to the late production examples like sport bucket seats with leather surfaces, a three-spoke steering wheel, and color-coordinated door panels and lower dash panels.

The seller’s car is both a driver and a project, with the listing noting that it was subjected to months of outdoor parking at a mechanic’s shop during Florida’s storm season, which resulted in one side of the car being sandblasted by wind-borne debris. The listing also notes that the interior has some cosmetic defects that can be addressed with a proper detailing, and that some minor mechanical issues are likely able to be resolved by a transferable lifetime warranty that will come with the car. The Cabriolet is offered with no reserve, and looks like an affordable way to get into off-season convertible ownership.

Technically a MK3.5. Bummer about the slush box. I’ve got a bare bones ‘01 with a five speed and it’s a hoot to toss around. One of the last analog feeling cars meant to be fun to drive. There’s a constant argument somewhere behind the dash on which idiot light will randomly be on! Will be selling it or the 944 in the future and it’s a real toss up.
