Final Year Project: 1971 Dodge Super Bee

When the Road Runner began flying off Plymouth dealer lots soon after its introduction in 1968, Dodge must have been envious, as it didn’t take long before they came up with a similar offering.  The result was the Coronet-based Super Bee, and while it was a fine competitor, the cost was a bit higher than the cartoon-themed car.  Consequently, it didn’t sell as well, but today that makes it more of a rarity in the marketplace.  This 1971 Dodge Super Bee here on eBay seems like a solid project, but it’s also only a couple of steps away from being a decent driver.  This cool Mopar resides in Celeste, Texas, with the current bid of $847 likely way under the reserve.

Although the Road Runner soldiered on for a few more years, U.S. production of the Super Bee ended in 1971.  That’s also the year Chrysler’s B-Body cars got a redesign, which came to be known as fuselage styling, so the 1971 Super Bee is an easy model to identify.  There’s no mention of how old the paint is here or if some of it is still original, but black is stated to be the factory color, and this one is also said to have come with the stripe delete option.  It’s also a southwestern car, with a body that’s stated to be solid and in need of almost no rust repair.

The entry-level big block for the Super Bee was a 383 Magnum, and that’s how this one came equipped, with the seller stating that the engine is still numbers-matching.  Also available was a 440 and the famed 426 Hemi, but the small block 340 was also a one-year-only option in ’71.  Some additions under the hood here include a Weiand intake manifold with a Holley carburetor on top, plus MSD ignition.  The TorqueFlite automatic is also the original component, but it’s going to need some repairs or an overhaul before this car is drivable, along with some brake work.

For the most part, the interior seems to be in surprisingly good condition, with the dash, instrument panel, seats, and even headliner remaining in more than adequate shape for a driver.  It’s also a positive to find that this is a factory A/C car, and although the glove box door is missing and the console could use refreshing, this one doesn’t appear to need a whole lot more attention inside.  Once the tranny and brakes are dealt with, this could make a fun drive as you work on it type of project, and I’m seeing lots of potential here.  How about you?

Currently at 13,400. It looks like a solid project, but I wonder if it has sustained front end damage, as the wheel well trim and reflector units are missing. GLWTA!! :-) .
