When the Ford Thunderbirds dropped the 2-seat format, they became known as “Square Birds” (1958-60). That generation was followed by the “Bullet Birds” of 1961-63. The next iteration, including the seller’s 1966 T-Bird, was sometimes dubbed the “Flair Birds”, perhaps for the style they brought to the table. This Landau edition has been in storage for years, but the seller has coaxed it to run with some help. Needing some more tinkering, this ‘Bird is available in Somersworth, New Hampshire, and here on eBay for $2,605 or the next higher bid.

Purists will say the real Ford Thunderbirds were the 2-passenger models of 1955-57. While they sold around 53,000 copies in that configuration, the Flair Birds found 236,000 buyers, more than 69,000 units in 1966 alone. So, the decision to turn the T-Bird into a true personal car capable of taking four folks to the opera was the best financial decision for FOMOCO.

The Landau edition of the ’66 T-Bird had enlarged C-pillars, which eliminated those small windows for rear seat passengers to gaze out of. This resulted in an even more formal look, adding to the luxurious tone of the automobile. All these birds had plenty of power provided by a robust 390 cubic-inch V8 engine, and you only got an automatic shifter. Due to sitting, there is a fuel line problem that the seller hasn’t sorted out (but it runs well with starter fluid).

We’re told that brake work is needed and the power windows will go down on their own, but not back up. The body and paint seem to have held up well during the Ford’s hibernation, and the interior seems tidy (dig the spacious back seat). You might have a decent weekend driver here with a few weekends’ work, avoiding the hefty expense of a restoration.

This would have been a sharp car in its day. Love the Landau roofline and the cushy blue upholstery. I wonder if the attractive blue paint would respond to some attention?
Wow! That is the cleanest engine bay i have ever seen on a car just out of hibernation. If i still lived in new england …….
My exact thoughts when I saw this.
I have always liked this generation of T birds the most. This particular car is in great shape. Not hit, chrome is good , and paint is even ok. This would be a pleasure to mechanically restore and a pleasure to drive. I don’t know why they don’t command more money, but I ain’t complaining. 😆
For me the Landau roof would be a deal killer. I like the two little quarter windows that were standard on the 64-65 models as well as some 66 editions as well. The 66 was also available with the first year 428.
The engine compartment is missing the two braces that go to the firewall, it may have been worked on.
What are those two things connecting the shock towers to the firewall?
You are so right, I put on my glasses lol
