Free Car? 1967 Chrysler Newport Drop-Top

Throughout the 1960s and 1970s, the Newport was Chrysler’s entry-level car. But there was nothing basic about any Chrysler product, so the Newport was well-heeled. After a redesign in 1965, the 1967 Newport was treated to new sheet metal, and convertibles like this one were few in number – less than 2,900 of them rolled off the assembly line. This example has been sitting in a shop for 20 or more years and may actually run. Starting at $3,500, the car may be free now because it’s been on the market for a year in Wills Point, Texas (or the seller here on Facebook Marketplace has neglected to take down the listing). Hail to “Zappenduster” for this Mopar tip!

These C-body Chryslers were big, heavy cars, so ample propulsion was needed. A 383 cubic inch V8 was standard and most of the vehicles left the showrooms with TorqueFlite automatic transmissions. You could opt for a 440 V8 if you felt the 383 wasn’t going to get the job done. We assume this hardware arrangement can be found under the hood of this once forgotten drop top.

Not much is known about this barn find. It has had at least three owners, and the odometer reading isn’t divulged. The paint color is said to be white, so we assume some primer is under all the dirt and dust it’s been wearing for decades. But the interior is red and may be viable in places. The seller says some gas was poured into the carburetor, and the engine fired up, so there’s reason to hope the mechanical needs of this project won’t be too many.

The seller adds that a new power brake booster may be needed, suggesting some attempt may have been made to move the vehicle. And apparently, the top goes up and down, even with all the grime. There is no title, and the car was apparently inherited by the seller. Whether the price is somewhere between zero and $3,500, we guess the seller wants to reclaim the space. Unless the car is already gone. Trades are on the table.
