Fresh 340 Power: 1971 Plymouth Satellite

Disclosure: This site may receive compensation from some link clicks and purchases.

The Plymouth Satellite got a completely new look for the 1971 model and featured what became known as fuselage styling, a lot different from its predecessor yet modern and still plenty sporty.  I’m sure by now many of these cars have been cloned into Road Runners or maybe even a GTX, the latter of which ceased production at the end of ’71, so it’s kind of refreshing to find one that’s still being presented honestly for what it is instead of isn’t such as this 1971 Satellite here on eBay.  The B-Body is in sunny Cocoa Beach, Florida, with the buy-it-now price set at $17,500.

The seller says he acquired the Mopar about 5 years ago and had it brought to FL from California, where it’s since been stored in a climate-controlled environment with a body that’s stated to be in rock solid condition with very little rust.  Granted, the paint has seen better days and there will be a few dents and dings to work out along with a couple of minor rust issues on the right rear quarter, but overall this one seems to have strong panels all the way around and even the areas around the windows are claimed to remain in excellent shape.

Although originally equipped with a 318, there’s now a 340 under the hood that’s said to be brand new inside and just broken in with zero miles of driving, with some impressive specs including a Comp cam, forged pistons, forged crank, Hooker headers, double roller timing gears along with a high-rise intake and an Edelbrock 750 carb on top.  A TorqueFlite automatic takes care of shifting duties, although we aren’t provided any other specifics regarding the transmission, but in the back is a Sure Grip 8 3/4 rear end with 3,23 gears so that’s even more good news.

Upon the seller’s acquisition, lots of the interior was missing but he’s given the inside some attention already and added some used but good-condition panels and a steering wheel plus installed a new headliner.  The dash pad will need to be dyed the right color and the seats reupholstered to match, but I’m glad the carpet is gone so we can see the floors which the owner describes as mint, and judging from the photos they do appear to be nice and solid, at least the sections we get to view.  Another positive is the option to make an offer, in case you find the asking price of $17.5k a bit steep.  How much would you be willing to spend on the 1971 Plymouth Satellite we’re seeing here?

Nice car. You would think it would have a bench seat with a column shifter.

Not if it’s a Sebring Plus, which I am questioning.

The factory bench seat must have been replaced with bucket seats. I had a ’65 Dodge Polara with bucket seats and beautiful console between them with the automatic shifter. Chrysler products with factory bucket seats always came with a console where the standard or automatic shifter was placed. Also, the shifter on the column is a giveaway sign that this car came with a bench seat.

Bucket seats and column shift is very common in 60s and 70s Mopars.

Just a satellite. Not a Sebring or a plus. My 73 challenger had a 318 and column shift auto.

Needs plenty – complete paint which means removal of engine Trans & suspension interior removed DIPPED & Glass beaded then rust proofed … interior panels resprayed with vinyl urethane High temp paint seats reupholstered new sound deadner & carpets New steering column & a proper 5spd gear box or 6.
The 340 Sniper EFI + a 250 NOS shot solid combo.
Last but not least given the cavernous engine bay a Vulcan Cannon Mini Gun canister fed center console joystick control & duel pop up .50s in the trunk on a swivel turrent canister fed with a 2nd Joystick control.
    For Pest Control.
It’s black market hard to get Japanese bridge paint – various Japanese car clubs have it thru Yakuza connections..why?
It absorbs Radar – developed because Ship radars picked up Tokyo Harbor bridges as ships.
And yea it’s the dirty lil secret of U.S. military stealth programs
Run flat tires & engine kill switches & Push Bars front & rear your ready for the Apocalypse

This look like a Roadkill car, until I saw the interior which looks surprisingly good. Even with the good engine and solid body, this is worth no more than half the asking price.

Flippers generally bring stuff to market that might otherwise end up scrapped or continue rotting into obscurity. If their price is too high reality will correct them over time. Also you call the car junk, it appears to me to be a nice builder to do a little or go all out with.

Love the 71-72 look. This one seems to be missing the heater /ac core, washer bottle and maybe more?

Petes Motors in Pittsfield Mass had a new one in the showroom. Just back from SE Asia tour of duty I absolutely loved it. Beautiful blue white split bench seats with arm rest, white..stunning…coulda, woulda and shoulda. Twas a 318 auto…
You would think, at least to my way of thinking, if i went to the length of rebuilding the mill i would have refreshed the house the engine lives in. That not being the case is a red flag to me. How many other shortcuts did he take on alleged rebuild? better have paperwork to back up the claim.
Sorry i got long winded. Passionateof the one that got away.

I like the looks of this year. The 340 definitely makes it more desirable than the 318… IF the 340 is actually built to the specs the ad states (Yes, definitely need paperwork proof), that alone, these days, would be worth a third of the asking price.
As much as I know people are upset that prices/values have risen over the last 10+ years (it’s not the dealers asking the prices that’s causing values to go up.. it’s those who are buying them at those higher numbers), and cars that I list for my clients are at current market values, I’m not beyond saying when something is or isn’t market value. With MoPars still jumping (despite the rest of the market softening), I hate to say that this Satellite isn’t far off… well, IF the engine IS what the ad says it is. I’d imagine that they’ll be able to get around $12-$14K, so asking 17K is a good starting point.

Bracket car to have some fun with w/o spending a fortune restoring body & paint. As mentioned 12 to 14k about tops only if 340 documented.
