From The Barn To The Weeds: 1962 VW Beetle

Disclosure: This site may receive compensation from some link clicks and purchases.

This one’s a bit rough. And the seller is a bit vague. And there aren’t a lot of pictures. OK, so let’s look at it anyway, after all, it is the one time omnipresent VW Bug. This 1962 example (at least that’s what the owner thinks it is) can be found in Wilmington, North Carolina and is available here on Facebook Marketplace for $2,900.

Yes, these were everywhere at one time but today when found, they seem to be either completely restored or look like this. The headline indicates “Not Sure” regarding the year, I would think the title, which he claims he has, could verify that that little detail. The seller says this VW was originally a barn find and was parked as such for 30 years. Well, out of the barn and into the weed patch I guess.

The seller adds that this bug is rusty, specifically the floors and spare-tire well. Not surprisingly, Bugs are subject to rust especially based on climatic conditions and storage situations. The floor under the rear seat, passenger side, where the battery resides is subject to a disappearing act too. I have an old friend who owned a ’60 when we were in high school and one day while tooling along on an expressway at 60 MPH, the floor and battery did a geronimo. The only thing left was two cables attached to battery terminal parts, the battery, and the floor having been left back at the previous milepost. The exterior surface rust on this VW is obvious as is illustrated; thankfully the weed patch cleaning at least reveals what’s been growing under all of that dust.

OK, no pictures of the interior or engine but here’s what we know, the seller states that there are no front seats. He’s already admitted that there is rust so, I’ll take a stretch here and suggest the floor went out with the seats. VW’s of this era have very simple, spartan interiors, so assuming that the metalwork can be kept to a dull roar, they are not too difficult to reconstruct. As for the engine, under the bonnet is a non-running, 40 HP, 1,200 CC, horizontally opposed, four-cylinder engine. Non-running you say? No worries, the seller has spare motors (not sure how many) but he doesn’t state whether or not they run. And, if you don’t want the spares, he’ll reduce the price by $300! As usual, there is a four-speed manual transaxle to facilitate gear changes. At least this VW does have new tires.

There you have it, not a lot of information and it really wouldn’t take that much effort to add some additional pics and details; it would really help with the sale. VW Bugs of this era are still popular and there would be interest but there’s a tipping point where a vehicle that appears to be problematic, based on the paucity of listing details/images causes potential buyers to move along, nothing more here to see as opposed to triggering a, “Yeah this one is worth further digging” thought. So, what do you think, past that tipping point or would you still want to inquire?

Nothing rare about a ‘62. Pass on this one.

Seen This posted for a while. I offered more than asking for it and they turned me down. Came with other car. No floors in car and seats are welded to the sides

I’ve always wondered what the little flashlight type bulb inside the headlight was for?

MarkP. That small bulb is the parking light.

I had a ’63 and had the same battery falling through the floor that the author did, during a blizzard driving the shoreway of Cleveland, brrrrr…..walking back to the exit ramp. Had to weld angle iron down both sides to bolt the seats to or they’d have fallen through too. But……a fun little car and super easy to work on. This one? Way too expensive.

Many of us would categorize this one in with the old clapped out 911’s posted…..most of which are in worse shape. Same basic rusted VWs.

Lots of money for so much rust.
