Garage Find: 1964 Chevrolet Impala SS Convertible

Disclosure: This site may receive compensation from some link clicks and purchases.

While the convertible model had been available since the first year of the Chevrolet Impala, it wasn’t until the third generation was introduced in 1961 that the Super Sport became an option.  Although the SS was later available on numerous Chevys, the Impala was the first car to offer that package, and it’s nice to find an early Impala that’s both a convertible and a Super Sport.  This 1964 Impala here on eBay is one such example, and even though it will require a complete restoration, this one might be worth considering if you’ve got the skills to get it back on the road.  This droptop is in Waukesha, Wisconsin, with the high bid currently standing at $13,000.

The seller wasted no time getting this one into the marketplace, as he says it was just found about a week ago after having been stored inside a garage since 1983.  It’s claimed to have been a one-owner car, and I believe the trim code of 1467 on the cowl tag indicates this is a legitimate V8-powered SS convertible.  Having a strong pedigree is always nice, but unfortunately, there’s a lot of work needed here.  Even though this one’s been stored for over four decades, many of the panels were riddled with rust before the long hibernation started, so quite a bit of exterior sheet metal work will be required.

While this one does indeed have a V8, it’s a 283, which was entry-level for eight-cylinder-powered Impalas in ’64.  A new starter has been installed, and the engine is claimed to be turning freely, with the seller believing it should be able to run with very little work.  The small block is attached to a two-speed Powerglide automatic transmission, but there are no clues offered as to whether or not it will still function after all this time sitting.  Deciding to work with this pair or remove them and install some more inspiring components instead will have to be up to the future owner.

Compared to the outside, the interior actually appears pretty good overall, and it seems complete for the most part.  One idea the seller mentions is that he works with a shop that performs restorations, and sounds confident that they could turn this one into anything you want, so perhaps that’s worth looking into.  However, costs would add up quickly, and I’m thinking this one would be a better bet for someone who can do most of the work themselves.  Is this 1964 Chevrolet Impala SS convertible one you’d be interested in taking on as a project?

Lordy – this one is crispy. And my how have the prices risen! I’m not entirely sure how much moolah it would take to get this one up to speed but it seems like one would be upside down with this one quickly.

Lots of rust but the dash and seats look ok. Most likely was a daily driver back in the day then put into storage in 1983.

If you think this is a parts car, please find another one. This is a convert SS…rare again…It amazes me in this day and age we still have people who think these cars are a dime a dozen or wants to pay the cost of doing business as of last century…Go ahead and find another one….tell me the price….good luck

they may not be a dine a dozen but if you can’t do the work yourself it will still cost an arm and a leg. I figure with todays labor costs it will run you another 50 grand to get back to where it should look like.also if the guy said that he works with people that can redo it why didn’t he do just that and then sell it for a good price.

Many legit reasons..health, does not have the monies, divorce, etc..life happens and you move the car on to someone with the skill or resources, to finish the car. Not a hard concept, to figure out. I do believe your 50k number is too high and much depends on exactly what the level you want the car to be at….daily driver, Garage queen, or show level..etc. again an SS Convt, orginal numbers, checks all the boxes, and not a dime a dozen!

The ‘64 Impala I purchased had a perfect body, and a frame that was like tissue paper. Couldn’t even be jacked up to change a flat. If the body is this bad, it’s probably only good for parts. Sad.

To do it right would be body off and 50k is not going to cut the Mustard. All in to make this like new is easily 80k from my experience (paying someone that is). Frame health is the great unknown here.
