Garage Find Survivor: 1962 Chrysler New Yorker

For 57 model years (1940 to 1996), the New Yorker was Chrysler’s top-of-the-line automobile. That’s if you discounted the Imperial, which was sold as a separate make for most of that time. The 1961-62 New Yorkers had slanted headlights, a Chrysler feature at that time, while the former had tailfins and the latter did not. The seller’s 1962 New Yorker looks like an excellent find, still wearing its factory blue paint. Located in Cheshire, Connecticut, this supersized Mopar is available here on Facebook Marketplace for $11,000 OBO. A nod goes to T.J. for this cool tip (even if it does have four doors).

Chrysler had intended to redesign its cars in 1962, even though they had switched to unibody construction two years earlier. But plans changed, and that meant the ‘62s would be variants of the ‘61s. To keep the New Yorker on a 126-inch wheelbase, they took a ’61 NY front clip and applied a Dodge Polara body to the back half, shearing off the fins and adjusting the sheet metal. That helped them to bide their time until 1963-64, when a new wedge look for the big Chryslers could be styled. Throughout the early 1960s, the New Yorker only used a 413 cubic inch V8 that produced 350 hp.

All 1962 New Yorkers had four doors. Excluding wagons, about 12,000 4-door sedans were produced along with fewer than 7,000 4-door hardtops. We don’t know the history of this one, but someone has taken care of it for nearly 65 years. There is no mention of running condition, just the aesthetics of the automobile, so interested parties will have to explore that with the seller.

The seller refers to the big car as a “rear garage find,” but does he really mean rare? The light blue paint was applied at the assembly plant, per the seller, and the doors open and close as tightly as they did in 1962. Chrysler’s push-button automatic transmission oversees the shifting of gears. From what we see of the interior, it looks tidy but not as fancy as you might expect for a New Yorker.     “I got me a Chrysler, it seats about twenty, so come and bring your jukebox money!” I like these. The canted headlights, that “Astro Globe” instrument cluster and even the Golden Tone radio..one of the finest-sounding AM boxes made. There was nothing quite like this automobile and never will be. Though they had to do a little hocus-pocus with the styling, if not a home run they hit a solid double. If the car runs and drives as well as it looks, the price isn’t too farfetched.

    Surprisingly, Hagerty is in agreement with the asking price. But Hagerty is usually high. From experience I know it will be hard to get that price for a 4-door NYer of that era.
