Giant Insect? 1959 Buick LeSabre Sedan

Buick redesigned its full-size cars in 1959, getting in on the Space Age look the rest of the industry was chasing. Slanted headlights were used that year only, similar to what some Chryslers were going with. The LeSabre debuted in ’59 as the junior car to the larger, more powerful, and luxurious Electra. This 1959 LeSabre 4-door sedan has either been babied for the past 67 years or is an older restoration that’s largely held up. Located in Grand Island, Nebraska, the green beauty is available here on craigslist for $22,000 OBO.

You either loved the weird styling of these vehicles or didn’t, but a lot of folks did since Buick delivered 285,000 LeSabres, Electras, etc. in 1959. If you were driving along in another car, looked in the rear-view mirror, and saw one of these Buicks approaching, you might think a giant insect from a B-grade science fiction movie was after you. The LeSabre used a 364 cubic inch V8, while the Electra was treated to more power (and wheelbase) with a 401 engine.

57% of all 1959 Buicks built were LeSabres. And 31% of them were 4-door sedans like this one. This one appears to be finished in Sierra Spruce (green) paint, though we don’t know if it’s original or a respray because no history is provided on this car (happens way too often). The odometer reads 46,000 miles, which could make it a low-mileage survivor. The only flaws we see are worn spots on the driver’s side of the front bench seat.

We assume the vehicle runs and drives as well as it looks, with a Twin Turbine Dynaflow transmission on board to make life easy for the driver. Fins were king in those days, and nobody played them up any better than Buick (except maybe Cadillac). If you’re looking for a vintage cruiser to fill up your garage, does this LeSabre float your boat? Thanks for the tip, Kelly Heftie.

  3. My grandmother had this exact car in a medium blue color! Quite a few great memories, but that was 50 years ago.
