Grass Fire Victim: 1972 Plymouth Satellite

Whenever I see the words “car” and “fire” used in the same sentence, my mind immediately goes into glass-half-empty mode.  Apple and Microsoft.  Booze and guns.  George Jones and Tammy Wynette.  Some things just don’t go well together, and flames near vehicles are never a good thing.  But if there’s a glass-half-full side of the 1972 Plymouth Satellite being offered for sale here on eBay, it appears that the grass fire was put out pretty quickly and that the flames mostly kissed only the driver’s side quarter panel before they were extinguished.  If you’ve been looking for an early seventies Plymouth project, this may be a pretty decent investment that won’t break the bank and could end up being a nice driver.  Bidding is currently up to $3,250 with the reserve not met.  Many thanks go out to reader Larry D. for the tip.

Make no mistake, I’m not implying that the grass fire was exactly kind to this Satellite.  There’s some fairly significant damage to a large area of the quarter, and things got hot enough that the side-marker light got partially melted.  But it certainly isn’t catastrophic, like what happened a few years ago to this 1970 Plymouth Superbird that was involved in a much worse garage fire.  It shouldn’t be too big of a job for a skilled body man to replace that panel, or if you are really skilled to possibly even repair it.

Although in need of restoration, the rest of the Satellite looks pretty good, especially if you’re a fan of green on both the outside and inside.  The car appears to be all original and complete and boasts of being a factory air-conditioned car.  Other than the driver’s side quarter panel, from what we can see rust and body rot do not seem to be much of an issue, although in one eBay photo the back bumper looks like it has been tapped.  Even under the trunk mat, things are looking OK, although I wish the seller had photographed the left side instead of the right.

Inside, things are looking like they need to be refreshed, but at least it looks like everything is all there.  Overall this is a pretty basic vehicle, with a bench seat upfront and a column-shifted automatic, but the Satellite wasn’t generally a high-end car and for the time period served its purpose reasonably well.  And when they’ve been fixed up they really do make nice cruisers, like this 1972 Satellite we featured a couple of weeks ago here on Barn Finds.

Under the hood is 318 cubic inch V8, which is said to be running and has a new carburetor.  The fuel tank has also been replaced, but the seller says that the exhaust system needs attention.  The car has no title and comes with a bill of sale only.  What are your thoughts on this 1972 Plymouth Satellite?

Grass fires 🔥 while sounding benign,
are actually potentially very dangerous and can get out of control in a real hurry with some wind.

Good write up Mike, and agree with Sams comment this is a prime resto mod.

What is anyone going to do with a car with no title???

Not a problem in states where only a bill of sale is required. There are several of them. NH is one.

The car needs at least a driver’s side quarter panel and a trunk floor, make a good resto mod with a Hellcat driveline

I doesn’t scare me, definitely a good candidate for resto-mod! You can melt the plastic lens with a heat gun
