Hemi Project: 1967 Plymouth GTX

One of the fun things about a first-year Plymouth GTX is the unique body, as the Belvedere-based muscle car spent only a single season in production before it got a redesign for 1968.  Even more exciting than the one-model-only shape was the availability of the Hemi right from the get-go, and if you’ve been looking for a 426-equipped project this one just might be calling your name.  The Mopar is located up in Springfield, Oregon, and can be seen here on eBay, where bidding has reached $19,800 but is still shy of the reserve.

Mopar Revival is offering this one and they’ve already gotten you a decent head-start, that is should you decide to go the DIY route the rest of the way.  Another option is to have them complete the restoration for you, an offer they are throwing on the table for a cost above and beyond the final price for the initial investment, that is if the GTX meets reserve at the auction’s end.  Wonder what the story is with the wing car we can see in the background?

Great news is two-fold regarding the monster motor, as not only is that 426 the born-with factory component but it’s already undergone a rebuild and comes with the correct outer parts such as the intake and exhaust manifolds, carburetors, air cleaner, and distributor.  Ditto on the automatic transmission, also the original piece and overhauled already, so once the bay is detailed to your liking they’re not too far from ready to go back in.

All sheet metal is stated as original, but there’s some work needed outside such as the roof skin, although a good used top section will be included in the sale.  I’m not sure if the GTX lightly tapped something or what happened, but the front end is a bit wonky though it doesn’t appear like a whole lot of effort would be required to get this area straightened out.  At some point, the quarters got radius-cut around the wheel openings, so that’ll need to be taken care of too.  Any guesses on how old those Road Huggers might be?

Inside, the seats and panels have been removed but it looks like most of the dash has been left intact.  A new seat kit and door trim will be included, but you’re on your own addressing the floor and trunk pan.  What would you do here, finish this one yourself, or let the folks at Mopar Revival continue once it’s yours?

Ahh, back when these were cheap enough for degenerate teenagers to own and abuse. I remember being told by our high school principle, that “good young people” drive low powered cars, and the “future criminals” drive ones like this. Most of us ended up driving regular cars because our Greatest Generational parents thought the same way. I have never been behind bars, so maybe there was some truth in it.

Yes, and if you look at the picture of the EBay seller, you may think that he looks familiar.

This is the 3rd or 4th GYC auction to be featured here in the span of a week. Someone has their EBay Store bookmarked,

I had one of these w/ a 440, alum heads, had 46k miles, dark green w/flat black hood stripes, auto on column, buckets, ex cond. It was a screamer for a 17 yr old, bought for $600 from literally an old lady in her 60’s! Sold it a yr later for $800 & that dude took it straight into a tree at 50+ totalling it! So sad.
