High Mileage Rarity: 1988 Ford Mustang Saleen #586

This is one of those cars that every so often, makes me want to sell a few projects so I can park one of these in the garage. It’s a Fox body Saleen Mustang, one of a few hundred made with numerous enhancements that made it instantly recognizable as one of the more desirable variants ever made. Featuring unique wheels, bodywork, interiors, and suspension upgrades, they weren’t supercars in terms of raw horsepower, but the overall package was still a healthy dose of upgrades and exclusivity over the standard GT. Find this Saleen with surprisingly high miles offered here on eBay in a no reserve auction with bids to just over $11,000.

These Saleen editions were almost always socked away for long-term storage when new. Anything blessed with names like “Saleen”, “Cobra”, or “SVT” were the proverbial baseball card or comic book that every owner thought would be worth a mint if they just didn’t drive it. It doesn’t always work out that way, though, and even with the exclusivity factory, the Fox body Saleens have never become reliable six figure cars – or even high 50s and 60s cars, unless the odometer still only had delivery miles on it. This example has actually seen some real use, with over 158,000 miles on the clock – kudos to the owner(s) for actually enjoying this rare performance car.

The interior, of course, shows the signs of wear and tear that come with a car that’s been used. The Momo three-spoke steering wheel is showing signs of age and years’ worth of hands gripping it daily, and the same goes for the seat bolsters on the Flo-Fit seats, which have seen enough entries and exits that the fabric has been worn straight off. The armrest, too, bears the hallmarks of providing a comfortable resting place for elbows of owners and passengers over the years. The good news is these are relatively easy fixes, especially if you’re friendly with a local upholstery shop. The seller notes the presence of a dealer-installed security system.

Despite some of the cosmetic flaws, the engine bay and body still present like that of a much younger car. The engine features BBK shorty headers with an aftermarket H pipe and dual Flowmasters. The current seller hasn’t done much in the way extensive maintenance, but a previous owner refreshed the bottom end in 2017. At the same time, an E303 cam kit was installed, so the Saleen isn’t exactly bone stock. Still, the upgrades are sensible ones and pair nicely with the enhancements Saleen was responsible for. With the mileage being what it is, you won’t be afraid to actually use this car, and I’m currently wishing I could be a bidder on this one.

Glad to see that someone actually had the sense to enjoy what the car was meant to be – driven and enjoyed 👍 😀

Amen! It would probably be worth about 6 grand more if they would have salted it away. Just drive the car and take care of it. Storing a car for a big payday later very rarely works out.

This is in really nice condition for such ultra high mileage. You can tell that someone clearly enjoyed this car, but there must be a few shill bidders in the mix to be bid up that high. IMO, it is worth about half of the current bid. My guess is that it will “sell” to a shill and then be relisted in about a week with a buy it now.

$5,500 for a Saleen? Not anymore. Fox body Mustangs have been rising in value for years, the Saleen is right at the top of the list when it comes to desirability. It’s current bid isn’t likely enough to bring this one home, regardless of the mileage.

From the pictures, if looking at only the body and underhood, one might guess it has one-third of its actual mileage. So obviously, driven and enjoyed but still well-taken-care-of. Replace the upholstery and stun your friends when you tell them its actual mileage.

,,,and don’t forget to replace the missing left bodyside molding too, if you can find one.

Being 22 years old with 150,000 on the cock it’s about 7,000 a year not lots of miles but enough to have been enjoyed . I say good for them . If it checks out there lots of fun left in it

10 years ago I bought one of the 1988 Saleen SSP coupes. At that time totally original with 150K on the clock. I DAILY DROVE everyday for 3 1/2 years up to a little over 175K when I sold the car.

Tioday that car is now worth 3 times the 10K I paid for it then with all the miles on the car. It’s all about condition!
