This barn find 1971 Saab Sonett has a lot of needs, particularly an engine, transmission, and rear window (although it looks like the seller is selling the rear window as well in another auction). On the other hand, the exterior panels are fiberglass, and it’s in Camarillo, California, so the floor pan might just be solid. The car is for sale here on eBay, with an opening bid of only $250 and no reserve. It’s also sitting next to another Sonett in the pictures, so I have hopes that it’s being sold by an enthusiast. Do our Saab experts know if the mechanical components from another Saab would work? I’m just wondering what a 900 Turbo drivetrain would do in this sports car body, since it’s not original anyway? Let us know how you’d get this car back on the road in the comments!

Inexpensive Barn Find: 1971 Saab Sonett Project

I’ve got my own 73 Sonett. I had designs on swapping in a 900 drivetrain and while I think anything is possible it would require a lot of work. The Sonett’s V4 takes up a less longitudinal space for starters. Not to mention the hubs and axles and brakes and…
I had a friend with a couple of these, and while I never cared for the styling, these were pretty cool cars. Leave it stock. The V-4 was a great, proven engine. This particular one is a mess, and surely, a parts car, although, pretty rare now, as Wiki claims, in 2010, less than 25 pristine Sonett ll’s exist, and regularly bring 5 figures.
Is he selling the rear window sepertly??!
The rear window in the aution is photographed on the same car. He is willing to remove the window for possibly another buyer and leave the the buyer of this car run arround looking for a rear window !!!
I would leave the window make it more sellable and start the bid with $500.
Twisted
WTF… Take the car further apart and sell it’s rear window? So basically you will have to win both auctions unless you happen to have a rear window laying around? The window will likely turn into a bidding war if someone is stupid enough to buy that car now.
Make a cool Lemons car with a Toyota 4A-GEC and a 5 speed dropped in.
