Inspection Encouraged: 1972 Dodge Dart Demon 340

Disclosure: This site may receive compensation from some link clicks and purchases.

This 1972 Dodge Dart is an unassuming vehicle, and you must look closely to spot the Demon badges on its front fenders. It still gives little away, with no indications that its engine bay houses a 340ci V8. The overall presentation is excellent, and its rust-free state means the new owner can enjoy this classic immediately. The Dart is listed here on eBay in Hammonton, New Jersey. Bidding has raced beyond the reserve to sit at $17,100.

The Demon option was introduced to the Fourth Generation Dart range in 1971, but beliefs that the name may offend some saw the badge dropped after 1972. This car rolled off the line during that second production year, presenting impressively in what I believe is Code F5 Bright Yellow (Gold) Green. The original owner elected not to order the optional tape stripes, giving the car an understated appearance. There are no significant defects in the panels or paint, and the trim and glass are above average for a vehicle of this age. Rust often plagued these classics, doing unspeakable things to the floors and rails. This Dart has avoided that fate and is as solid as the day it drove off the lot.

While buyers could order a 1972 Dart Demon with a 198ci slant-six under the hood, this car’s original owner selected the range-topping 340ci V8. They teamed that with a three-speed TorqueFlite transmission, adding power steering to lessen the driver’s workload. Tightening emission regulations were beginning to sap engine power when this car rolled off the line, but the driver still had 240hp and 290 ft/lbs of torque at their disposal. Both figures were lower than the previous year, resulting in the ¼-mile ET increasing from 15.1 to 15.4 seconds. However, most drivers would have struggled to notice the difference. This classic is in excellent health, and the seller has a slightly unusual approach with their listing. They actively encourage interested parties to perform an in-person inspection before submitting a bid. That suggests they have total confidence in the Dodge and have nothing to hide.

The Dart’s interior is as tidy as the rest of the vehicle, with some slight deterioration of the faux timber on the dash and some rub marks on the back seat the only flaws worth mentioning. The front seat and other upholstered surfaces look immaculate, with the same true of the dash, pad, and wheel. The seller doesn’t mention restoration work. However, the as-new state of the carpet and lack of significant interior defects makes me believe this interior has received at least a partial retrim. The photos reveal speakers mounted in the rear parcel tray, suggesting there is a hidden stereo somewhere inside this classic. Otherwise, there are no other additions. Life on the road will be more pleasant courtesy of the original owner’s decision to order this Demon with ice-cold air conditioning.

It can sometimes be challenging to determine whether any classic is desirable, but the fact this 1972 Dodge Dart Demon has attracted twenty-three bids in one day tells us all we need to know. People like what they see and may also appreciate the seller’s candid approach. Are you tempted to accept their offer and perform an in-person inspection? If you do and decide to join the bidding war, I join our readers in wishing you good luck.

drop in replacement all la small blocks are the same from the out side.
the only external id on any of them is the 360. it was externally balanced.

oh and the stamping on the id boss

and since he doesn’t include vin body tag or build sheet, i’d buy that statement.

she’s a nice looking rig. i’m curious to see where the bidding gets to

Looks like a very nice car in and out. I like that the original owner chose to delete the Demon stripes, it gives the car a clean, uncluttered look. There doesn’t seem to be anything to complain about here, just pay the man and drive it home.

Wow, neat car! As stated, most of these rotted away. A 340 with factory A/C, in such fabulous condition, really nice!!!

These and the Darts of the time were nice looking cars. I had a ’70 Dart six-banger. Very nice car. I drove it for seven years and the only thing that went bad was the alternator.

The only thing that says Demon to me are the badges.

The Demon was the fastback coupe, the Dart Swinger was the notchback coupe. The sedan was simply a Dart. The Plymouth equivalents were the Duster (fastback Coupe), Valiant Scamp (notchback coupe), and Valiant (sedan).

I have actually wondered(lately) if a demon 340 ever came with A/C, even googled it & never found one yet here it is! It has to be rare no doubt! How rare we may never know but at least for 20 years I’ve never seen it! If anyone knows I’m curious! Great Car! Could be ultra rare!

      Because it’s not a Demon.

It is a Demon, but let’s see the VIN, so it can be identified as a real 340. It should have 340 callouts on the fenders, stripes or no stripes. PS I have a 1970 340 Duster with factory AC and so does my friend.

I am surprised to see this car has the LOWLINE steering wheel. Also, the Center Caps on the wheels are from 1971 and earlier wheels. For 1972 and later Chrysler had a different wheel center cap.

and again boatman, all 71 and 72 dodges that have the same body as the plymouth duster are demons. that is what doge named them. then in 73 the name was changed to dart sport coupe. demon was not a ht rod up-grade like cuda is to barracuda.

Two other comments: 360 Engine option was NOT AVAILABLE in Darts for 1972. Also. Air Cleaner Housing is not PERIOD CORRECT for 1972 A Bodies.

I looked hard at the engine photos. The fender tag is missing. With this interior to me was a 225 w/AC. Somebody pulled the drivetrain out and installed the 360 with trans in. And up graded the rims. Also was the rear end updated with the torsion bars? Nothing wrong with more power under the hood. In my life time I never saw a 340 Demon/Dart with this interior. That’s if it was a 340. I really doubt it. Good luck to the next owner. 🐻🇺🇸

My feeling is that it is a factory 318 car, not bad in its own right. Experienced MOPAR fans can not be fooled. Just advertise it as what it is.

Adam, I’m not sure where you got the 340 from The ad states “Nice 1972 Dodge Demon. 360 4 barrel Auto trans. Very nice driver.”
This is a very different value proposition than with a factory 340. I’d want to see the fender tag on this one to establish value. I had one just like it (well it has a 225/4 speed and I’d love to have it back). This appears to be a nice car and its over 18K now.

Often mistaken all 1971-72 Dodge Dart “fast backs” were Demons until the name change to Dart Sport in 73, Demon did not refer to a HP version. There was a Demon 340 in 1972, but the 360 was not an option on the A Body Demon, Dart. No fender tag? No vin? It looks like a 318 Demon to me, air cleaner is not stock so? Mopars did not have trunk splatter paint, Electronic ignition was an option in 72, but not where this ECU is mounted. Rear torsion bars? HUH? I own a 74 19,000 mile 318 Duster and a 72 37,000 mile Dodge Challenger 318 rallye which gets people telling me I put the hood on etc.. 72 was an odd year the Challenger offered 4 version a 318, 225, 318 Rallye and 340 Rallye. The author sees it as F5 yellow, looks like green to me? Regardless it looks like a nice car

Yes. That’s exactly where the 5 pin box was located. I am the original owner of a 72 340 Duster that sits in the garage next to me with the exact setup. Since I bought it new in 1972, it’s oem. The interior has the same dash and wheel. Many other things under the hood on this car are not original. I can’t speak to this cars originality at all, just the ignition box location.

I bought a 71 duster 340 with an 727 auto and power steering and front disc brakes, I got a base duster with wheel caps, vinyl floor, no trunk mat,
    No radio one base mirror.

Demons would be the same thing, the give away is the dual exhaust tips and on dusters the grille.

The price is right the body is clean and straight, the interior is clean. What’s the problem.

Around 1970 me and three friends all decided to get new cars at about the same time. We all had part time jobs and commuted to the local community college. So no muscle for us. My three friends went Mopar: two Dodge Challengers and a Plymouth Duster. I bought a Camaro. My car, the Duster and one of the Challengers were six cylinders with manual three speeds. The other Challenger was the 318 with the Torqueflight. Upscale! Anyway, of course we had to run against each other. If memory serves I believe the Duster maintained second place to the V8 even with the column shift. Great memories! Thanks again BF.

    I had a ’72 Demon very similar to this car. Born a 225 /6 auto 7 1/4, I did a full drivetrain swap to a 360 727 8 3/4. Fun car!
