JDM Troopy: 1996 Toyota Land Cruiser HZJ75

The Toyota Land Cruiser is one of the more well-loved SUVs ever sold in the U.S., but that doesn’t mean enthusiasts still don’t look longingly overseas at the models never sold stateside. There is a wide range of configurations and drivetrain choices not offered here that make the Land Cruiser a popular vehicle to import from overseas markets. This 1996 Toyota Land Cruiser HZJ75 Trooper Carrier, or Troopy, was imported from the country of Georgia and is listed here on eBay with bids to $25,000.

How do you make a Land Cruiser more desirable? For one thing, equip it with a diesel engine, which takes the already reliable truck and puts it on another level of un-killable. And if you felt like your FJ40 or 80-Series truck no longer stood out from the crowd, then the overseas market truck will help you avoid becoming a wallflower. I’d say another advantage is the opportunity to flip a truck like this for a modest profit, but I don’t know enough about the overseas sale prices for these HZJ75 trucks to say confidently you could make your money back and then some once landed.

Now, unlike most of these rigs that get imported, the seller has actually done some nice reconditioning work to make the “Troopy” more livable. It helps that he actually used it for his own family for a spell, so upgrades like forward-facing rear seats to accommodate his children and a long list of recent mechanical servicing are two big wins for the next owner. The interior definitely looks better than that of a lightly-warmed over military rig, so I’m sure there’s more that can be written about the Toyota’s cabin that isn’t explicitly spelled out in the listing. I doubt the upholstery and door panels are original.

Some of the improvements the seller has overseen include “….timing belt, water pump, fuel filter, oil filter, coolant flush, transmission oil, glow plugs, glow plug relay, fuel injector, new tires all around with spare.” That’s pretty much everything you could want completed to make this Land Cruiser as turnkey as possible, so it looks more and more like a smart buy if you’re bent on owning one of Toyota’s most iconic 4x4s that never came to the U.S.

No seatbelts in the rear and he hauled his kids in it? That’s just dumb.

Beyond that, it’s a cool rig.

Lovely looking Land Cruiser. It’s a crying shame this was never offered in the USA. I would’ve bought it.
