L82/4-Speed: 1978 Chevrolet Corvette Silver Anniversary Edition

There is no denying that by the time 1978 dawned, the C3 Corvette was no longer the fire-breathing monster it had been a decade earlier. However, ordering one with the optional L82 version of the 350ci V8 under the hood brought the buyer respectable performance. That was the decision made by the first owner of this 1978 Corvette Silver Anniversary. It presents well as a survivor-grade classic that the winning bidder can enjoy immediately. The seller still hits the road on sunny days, and you could do the same by submitting a bid on this beauty.

The 1978 model year was a milestone for the Corvette, because, after a faltering start, it cemented its place in automotive folklore with twenty-five years of production. It is now over six decades since the first cars rolled off the line, and it seems impossible to imagine the market without this badge. The first owner helped Chevrolet to celebrate the momentous occasion by ordering a Silver Anniversary Edition. The package added $399 to the Corvette’s sticker price, bringing two-tone Silver and Gray paint, aluminum wheels, and dual sports mirrors to the party. Buyers could add any further features from the RPO list to tailor the car to their tastes and, as we shall see, the first owner did so with this classic. It is best to consider this ‘Vette as a survivor that presents well for its age. The paint holds a respectable shine, with none of the patchiness or matte areas that sometimes plague this shade. An in-person inspection will undoubtedly reveal minor chips and marks, but there are no significant issues or problems. The seller’s images confirm their claim that the #4 body mounts require replacement, but there are no other visible structural problems. The glass roof panels are crystal clear, and the wheels are free from stains and physical damage.

This Corvette’s first owner ticked a few desirable boxes on their Order Form, with none more so than selecting the L82 version of the 350ci V8. This small-block sends 220hp and 260 ft/lbs of torque to the rear wheels via a four-speed manual transmission, with the power-assisted steering and brakes providing an effortless driving experience. This combination is the most highly sought by enthusiasts today, and cars of this caliber typically command a healthy premium over lesser examples. The seller confirms that not only is this ‘Vette in excellent mechanical health, but it is also numbers-matching. It has clocked 38,000 miles since receiving a complete engine rebuild, with the clutch and many brake and suspension components replaced since that day. There is nothing for the winning bidder to slip behind the wheel and enjoy a car that runs and drives beautifully. Considering the long list of recent work, it should provide years of trouble-free motoring.

It is fair to expect some interior wear in any classic of this vintage, but this Corvette has survived surprisingly well. The wheel leather exhibits deterioration, but that is the only significant cosmetic issue. The seats and other upholstered surfaces are very presentable, and there are no glaring issues with the carpet or plastic. The seller slotted a retro-style stereo into the spot typically occupied by the factory radio, but there are no other visible modifications. Functional shortcomings include a non-retracting power antenna and air conditioning that doesn’t blow cold. The seller suggests a recharge will cure the second problem, but having the system inspected for potential leaks would be wise. The wipers sometimes don’t switch off, although the seller includes a new switch and motor for the buyer to install. Otherwise, the winning bidder benefits from power windows and a tilt wheel.

The seller listed this 1978 Chevrolet Corvette Silver Anniversary here on eBay in Iron Ridge, Wisconsin. Bidding sits below the reserve at $5,100, although the auction action suggests that figure will climb in the coming days. It isn’t perfect, but it could be ideal for enthusiasts seeking a driver-grade classic with only minor needs they could tackle in a home workshop. Its L82 engine increases its desirability, but is that enough to tempt you to join the bidding party?

The thought of any car from Wisconsin is a little unnerving. But, my 71 LT1 came from there and it’s rock solid. The L82 is a great base to build from. 4 bolt mains, forged pistons, forged crank, pink rods, 2.02 heads with screw in studs and a 350hp hydraulic cam. Compression was cut but increasing the combustion chamber volume. There are some ways to rectify that.

It’s definitely worth more than the current bid, but not a ton more. The L-82 and a 4 speed are certainly nice additions, but the bottom line is that it’s a car from the “dog years”. For someone that just wants a nice Sunday cruiser and doesn’t care about performance, this might fit the bill.

Gotta appreciate all of the undercarriage photos. From the lift points that re being used, the frame must be strong because they are resting on the weak points.

L82, you would think would bring more money, but the market right now is just not strong – not many people looking to buy cars like this right now.

My stance on a malaise era Vette has soften lately. This is a clean 78 Vette with a 4 speed. You don’t have to burn up the streets to enjoy a nice cruise around town or occasional drive just because it’s a Vette. It will always be an eye catcher if it presents well and you can get one for next to nothing making them a good deal today and you can add performance parts to enhance your driving experience. This edition Vette is a good deal in my opinion and being a Corvette it will always be a good adventure when ever you take her for a drive. Hope it finds a good home.
