Last Registered in ’91: 1964 Ford Galaxie

This 1964 Galaxie was last registered in 1991, so it appears that it has been sitting for quite some time. It is a solid and clean looking car, and it could be yours today. You will find it listed for sale here on Craigslist. Located in Parker, Colorado, it is being offered for sale with a clean title. The asking price for the Galaxie is $4,900. A big thanks has to go out to Barn Finder Ikey H for locating this car for us.

Sometimes you can look at cars like this Galaxie and wonder why they were parked in a barn in the first place. This one doesn’t appear to have any rust issues. The body looks clean and straight, and the owner states that the car doesn’t have any rust in this model’s usually susceptible areas such as the trunk floor or wheel wells. The body is straight, and the Pagoda Green and Wimbledon White paint look really good. I really think that a once-over with a clay bar would really get the car sparkling.

The interior is said to be original, and it does seem to be in good condition. The carpet looks like it needs a clean, and there is a handle missing off the driver’s door. The dash pad is also cracked, but the rest of the interior is original, and really doesn’t need to be touched.

The rear seat is nearly as good as the front. Certainly, the upholstery is intact, with no signs of rips or tears. It has a couple of dirty marks on it, but I think that these would clean quite well. I’d be inclined to consider cleaning the interior myself, but I think that a reputable car detailer could really bring the majority of the interior up to looking like new.

Under the hood is the 289ci V8. This is fitted with a 2-barrel carburetor and is backed by a manual transmission. The transmission is fitted with overdrive, but this doesn’t work, so will need some attention. Because the car had been sitting for a while, the owner undertook some remedial work to prepare the car for a return to active duty. This has included, new steel belted radial tires, new master cylinder, new mechanical fuel pump, and a new gas tank, the carburetor has been rebuilt, new hoses, and a full service. The car also comes with the original dealer invoice, the window sticker, original Registered Owners Manual, and an original 1964 Ford/Mercury Shop Manual.

We’ve seen a few cars come through at Barn Finds recently that would either make great first classic cars, or great first project cars, and this fits into these categories quite well. The car could easily be driven and enjoyed exactly as it is. It is also a car that the new owner could lavish a few dedicated weekends of hard work on, and what would emerge would be a bright and sparkling car that would attract attention wherever it went. I think that the new owner of this Galaxie will end up owning a car that is quite a nice piece of equipment.

Man, you could spend a few more grand on this thing and have $75,000 of fun while the 2-door snob is holding out for that perfect Barrett-Jackson dream.

It’s hard to see $75,000 worth of fun out of any 64 Galaxie with a 289 and a 3spd column shift, regardless of the number of doors.

You’re right. It doesn’t have a 427 so no one could ever love it and it should be crushed. Thanks for setting me straight.

There’s a good bunch of big 60’s sedans coming up this week with V8’s and manual transmissions. Any one of them make for keepers.

The vinyl seat trim (an $18 option) looks original. With 289, 3 on the tree, full wheel covers and an am radio, the original sticker price was probably around $3000. It looks like a good fixer upper.

Standard cloth and vinyl on the Galaxie 500. That’s not an all vinyl interior

No vinyl option on the invoice pictured in the ad.

      $3309 including transportation.

Good work on targeting the original price.

Also had HD battery, the overdrive, rocker trim, light group, WWs, power steering, radio and wheel covers.

It would mean learning how to drive a 3 on the tree, but I’d gladly take this puppy home for $4000!

Awesome looking car! 1964 has always been my favourite year for the Ford Galaxie and the Fairlane. You don’t see that many 4 door Galaxies, let alone those with a 3 on the tree manual shifting gearbox. :)

My Dad bought one just like this new and it was the second car I ever owned. I even got my license driving this 3 speed manual transmission. A drunk drove across our yard T boned it and wrapped it around a tree. The insurance company paid me $600 for it. If I had an empty spot, I would buy this car today.

All I’d do is put a set of white wall tires on it convert to a 4 barrel carb. And maybe lift the saging rear end a (little).

The 3 speed with OD should give the 289 a little kick, and I’m sure it will be a lot less thirsty than a 352 or 390.

My brother should be on his way now to look at this car! If it all checks out we will buy it, maybe!

I LOVE this car, perfect color and everything. I found a dealer film strip from Chevrolet comparing this year of Galaxies to Impalas. Being a Ford man, I had to watch it to see what Chevy had to say. They had a woman wearing a sweater slide across the seats of both, and the space-agey metal flakes in the Galaxie’s upholstery snagged it! I’m not sure how many Chevy dealers tried to use that, but it was funny to see. I’d have this car in my driveway right now if I had the money.

I would upgrade the brakes for safety, an FM converter for the radio and dual exhaust for my ears. This would be a fun cruiser.
