Lead Sled: 1955 Olds Holiday 88

Searching through the maze of vehicle-for-sale classified ads these days can sometimes turn up some rather interesting finds. In this case, it is a mild-custom 1955 Oldsmobile Holiday 88 with the 324 V8 and 4-barrel carburetor, and it’s listed here on craigslist in Norristown, PA.

It looks like an older restoration in “Lead Sled” fashion, with Lake Pipes, fender skirts, whitewalls, Lancer-style front hubcaps, handpainted stripe work in the Von Dutch style, and pink-on-black color scheme.  I say “older” because the pictures in the original listing show signs of deterioration. Specifically, I’m referring to the dashboard picture above where the carpet looks dirty, the picture below where the paint finish needs a good compounding, one picture in the original ad where the taillight chrome looks pitted, and another picture where the headliner has a tear in it.

On a more positive note, something else that intrigued me was the asking price of $10,500 for the car and a bunch of extra parts. If my guess is correct, this car may have been done up sometime in the last 25 years, and might well have cost quite a bit more to put together than they’re asking now.  One of these, if restored to factory-correct condition, could fetch upwards of three times that amount.

1955 was the second year of a completely-redesigned platform for GM. Many chassis components are interchangeable between Olds, Chevy, Pontiac and Buick of this style. I will admit that I dig the tri-five era vehicles for some reason, which doesn’t make a whole lot of sense because I wasn’t born yet when these were new. It’s probably good that I don’t have anywhere to keep or work on one because I’d probably spend more time and money on the car than my house.  I’d sure enjoy it, though. How about you? Would you have one if you could?
