Levi’s Interior: 1977 Jeep J-10 Honcho 360 V8

For you office workers out there, remember years ago when “Jeans Friday” was a big thing? “You mean we can actually wear jeans to the office?” “Yes, Johnson, but just on Fridays. Now get back to work, and don’t let me catch you checking your MySpace page again!” Then 2020 hit and all bets were off. Now you could wear anything you wanted, or nothing at all because you worked from home? Yeah. To go one better, this 1977 Jeep J-10 Honcho has a Levi’s interior so you can enjoy denim every day of the week and stick it to the man! Thanks to Matt H. for the tip!

This Jeep pickup has the Honcho package, which was available only on the 119″ wheelbase J-10 pickup with power steering. It came with a chrome front bumper, a rear step bumper, five big white letter tires and 15×8 white spoke wheels, bright trim around the side windows, and special paint and graphics. The HONCHO graphics are faded, but it has the classic Levi’s interior, or some of it.

Jeep made this version of their full-sized pickup from 1971 through 1988. As you remember, Chrysler bought AMC in 1987 and the full-sized Jeep pickup was competition for their Dodge pickups so it quietly went away. A smaller Comanche pickup would be introduced but the aging Jeep J-series trucks were gone. Sad.

A Sun Orange exterior with a Levi’s blue interior sure is unique and Miami Dolphin fans must love it. It looks a bit more contrasty inside than it should because the blue carpet isn’t there and the former Levi’s bench seat appears to have been recovered in black vinyl or something. I hope the missing carpet doesn’t mean rust in the floor pans, the seller doesn’t say anything about rust or really anything in their ad. It looks like similar denim-like fabric is still available from several sources. I’d want to restore this truck exactly how it would have been from the factory, as usual. You can see another Honcho feature, the engine-turned dashboard. Very cool. This one has an automatic transmission with a column shifter.

The engine is an AMC-sourced 360-cu.in. OHV V8, which was factory-rated at just under 200 horsepower and 245 lb-ft of torque when new. It sends power through that automatic transmission and a full-time Quadra-Trac system to all four wheels as needed. A couple of weekends of detailing under that hood and I’m sure this one would look fantastic again. The whole truck looks great to me and the seller has it posted here on craigslist in Vancouver, Washington, and here is the original listing. They’re asking $5,500, or about half of Hagerty’s #4 fair-condition value! This is an absolute steal at this price, how is this not on a trailer headed to our house by now?! Have any of you owned a Jeep J-10 pickup?

Looks like a great deal. Problem is, my trailer is 3,000 miles away. But I’m right there, in spirit!

I owned an ‘81 J-10 with a 258 and a 4-Speed for almost thirty years. I kept it way past the safe-to-drive-point, thanks, in part to an inspection guy who knew I wasn’t using it for cross-country treks, and was heavy on The Pass Button. Unfortunately the thing these fantastic trucks were best at was rotting away. This one is a honey! IMO, all she needs to be perfect is a 3-Speed stick with a Granny. Great find!

Excellent candidate for a restoration. I’m in the process of restoring my 1983 J10 right now.

Jeep did a great job when they came to the standard truck market. Crude and unpretentious in appearance they served their customers in the same way as the other brands. This would be great for chores or conversation.

My ‘79 2 dr Cherokee Chief had the same turned dashboard in the same color blue. Another one of those from the ‘never should have sold it’ category.
    Great truck.
This Huncho looks like a great deal, if you don’t have to drive cross country to get it!

pick of the litter (of 17) on today’s. Rather the 258 i6 if true multipurpose off rd, this one if single use hauler (the Catalina 27 sloop in the driveway). I would prefer the F350 diesel tho.
Lots of aftr mrkt for the honcho. Less for my bronk (altho I can get every nut’n bolt the Heeps have more in accessories’n upgrades available).

I now own this truck. The original paint and graphics have been preserved. The whole truck was carefully wet sanded and then clear coated to preserve the original patina. It looks killer.
