Lost Storage: 1964 Pontiac Bonneville Drop-Top

The Bonneville was a staple in the Pontiac lineup from 1957 to 2005 and was usually the top-of-the-line offering. The cars were redesigned in 1961 through 1964 and the latter editions of the Bonneville rode on a three-inch longer wheelbase than the more pedestrian Catalina. This ’64 Bonneville convertible belongs to a collector who is losing his/her storage space, so the car has to go. It’s said to run well but has problems in the rust department. Located under a giant carport in Camillus, New York, this drop-top is available here on craigslist for $5,900. Once again, Barn Finder Mitchell G. comes through with another great tip!

Pontiac gave its full-size cars a mild restyle in 1964 and added about an inch to their overall length. The entry point was the Catalina, followed by the Star Chief, and then the Bonneville (one of my uncle’s favorite rides). Only the Catalina and Bonneville offered a drop-top and the latter saw sales of around 22,000 units. A 389 cubic inch V8 was standard fare but you could opt for a 421 (we don’t know which of those is in the seller’s machine).

This car belongs to a collector and more than one auto is being sold due to lost storage. But a dark and partially exposed carport is not the best place for a classic car anyway, so hopefully the buyer will have better quarters for it to reside. We’re told that mechanically this Bonney should be good, having been treated to a recent tune-up. As a result, it “starts and runs great” and we assume the automatic transmission is also solid (but the odometer reveals 114,000 miles).

Perhaps the biggest challenge will be fixing the body and applying new red paint. There are holes in at least two places in the sheet metal as the photos will attest. And as is often the case, there could be more where you can’t see. The leather interior seems to be nice, as is the brightwork and convertible top. The seller is sending along some extra parts, but no mention is made of what they are. Do you have room for this “Wide Track” in your garage?

New York = rust. I own one of these in blue, great cars but the one thing I have learned about Pontiacs of this Era is the chassis’ rust badly. I have had several that had bad frames including a 62 Bonneville convertible that died of frame rust.

Rust…yep..lol. I currently have a 63 GP that came from Washington state and made its way to S. Florida umpteen years ago and sat on a trailer.
Frame rails are pretty much gone..lol But found a good west coast frame for decent $$. Shipping is double the cost, but…o well. Things aren’t the prices they use to be. She’ll be a budget build. I just want to get her safe for the road again and have some fun with her. She won’t be restored, but will be decent enough.

My Mom had a 64 similar to this one. Bought in 65 as a used car. Blue/blue with bucket seats, 4 on the floor, tach mounted upper left.
Was later totaled when I was hit head on by a drunk driver. Walked away unhurt.
Always wondered who ordered this car.
