Low Mile Z28: 1987 Chevrolet Camaro Convertible

General Motors updated the F-Body platform for the 1982 model year, and this redesign lasted 10 years before the Camaro and Firebird received their next update. Today we have an example from about the midpoint of that cycle, a 1987 Camaro Z28. The listing claims the car has had only two owners, with the seller as the second, and boasts a relatively low 46,764 rolling miles. This Camaro is currently listed for sale here on Craigslist, north of Seattle in Lynnwood, WA, for a grand total of $20,000 OBO. Shoutout and thanks to Curvette for this T-Topless top tip!

Interestingly, the seller says this model has a “rare setup”: it’s “carbureted with TPI” (Tuned Port Injection). Rare indeed. File this under the “Things That Make You Say Hmmm” folder, because it can be one or the other, but definitely not both. After doing some digging on the engines offered for this generation of Camaro, I believe the seller is conflating TPI (which was offered on certain engines in 1987) with TBI, or Throttle Body Injection, which began to be offered the following year in 1988. But neither applies in this case, as the base engine for the Z28 in 1987 would have been the 4-bbl LG4 V8, so the seller is partly correct.

Now I am not trying to be too harsh on the seller here, because at first glance the car appears clean overall. The exterior white paint looks fairly decent, and flipping through the interior photos, the upholstery hasn’t seen much wear in its near 47k-mile lifespan. The seller said he completed several basic maintenance items and had it detailed recently, which may explain the suspiciously clean engine bay, but that’s no crime. A few other spots of concern include the trunk lid, which seems to be dealing with paint fade and/or yellowing, along with the seal or weather stripping near the spoiler. The passenger door panel fabric is also starting to pull away at the top.

The biggest issue is that the convertible top has no rear window, so we can’t be sure if, or for how long, it’s been exposed to the elements. However, if it was kept in a storage unit (as the background of the photos suggests) and covered, this might not be as big an issue. Finally, this is a convertible model and appears to be a 20th Anniversary Commemorative Edition, a fact the seller neglects to mention. And according to the thirdgen.org forum, GM did “…commemorate only the Camaro convertible as the 20th anniversary car signified by a map pocket…and because convertible production was on hold for the majority of the 1987 model year production, only 1,007 were made (263 Sport Coupes and 744 Z28s).” Again, I say, rare indeed, but this time for real. So, is the $20k OBO asking price a bit steep, or would you source a rear window and be back in business with a low-production F-Body convertible?

I wouldn’t think GM would have offered a hood on this anniversary Camaro that looks so hideous (God I hope not!). Get rid of it. The wrap around spoiler on the back isn’t bad looking though.
