In the world of the Chevrolet Corvette, the 1972 model may not come to most people’s minds when thinking about pivotal years in the car’s history. It was an unusual time in the automotive industry in general, and not in a good sort of way as insurance premiums were putting a damper on the muscle car market and many buyers were shifting their focus from performance to fuel efficiency and economy. Still, the Corvette soldiered on and Chevrolet sold about 27,000 units for ’72, however only 3,913 were equipped with the LS5 big block and just 6,508 were convertibles, so the 1972 Chevrolet Corvette LS5 454 Convertible being offered for sale here on eBay is a pretty rare example. Located in Encinitas, California, it comes with a price tag of $28,900.
The owner of this Corvette says that the car is currently in restoration mode, and a lot of what has already been done is things that can’t be seen from the outside. The paint is said to literally flake-off if you rub your hand across it, but at least it’s gonna come off easy when the next owner gets ready for a respray. The hood is said to be needing shims and the doors are in need of alignment to be perfect, and there’s no mention of why the driver’s side front fender is the only panel wearing primer instead of color, but if you can look past the ‘Vette’s current patina it’s not that hard to envision a decent looking car without a serious amount of headaches to get there. The original outside paint was Pewter Silver.
There’s no mention of whether or not the interior is original, but the seller does say that the black leather seats are really nice, although there’s one small area on the passenger’s backrest that is peeling. The carpet is said to be good, the gauges all working except the clock is intermittent, and for a driver quality Corvette things inside are looking more than acceptable. The car has new shocks, springs, and lower front-end bushings plus new brakes and exhaust. The original rally wheels have been restored and there’s a new set of BF Goodrich Radial T/As all the way around.
The 454 cubic inch engine is said to have been serviced recently, with a tune-up and all the fluids replaced, along with most belts and hoses. No word on whether or not it’s ever had a rebuild, but the car is said to have less than 60,000 miles so maybe it hasn’t needed internal attention yet. The carburetor has been rebuilt and there’s a new fuel tank and sending unit. There are a lot of good things going for this Corvette, plus also the option to submit an offer, and the seller reveals he is about $40,000 into this car already so it will be interesting to see if a lower price is accepted or if it goes for the full asking amount. What are your thoughts on this 1972 Chevrolet Corvette 454 LS5 Convertible?
The seller is 40K into it. It’s for sale because he found out how much it costs to paint it the right way.
Just finished a 7yr. restoration, or is it ever really finished, 72′ t-top, luggage rack(for the t-tops) C3. A labor of love to own and drive this car. The ’72 is the last year for both chrome bumpers, which you really need on this C3 era. The removable rear window and it’s tray are only one of the many unique features for this car. I’v driver a big block ’68 and it does wander somewhat because of being nose heavy, not sure with the ’72 big block. I kept the small block and went with the stroker motor at 383. The 400 crank and it’s components give me everything I can handle. I’m not a professional driver so when it breaks loose, be in a empty parking lot, great car!!
Not a bad price in my opinion, if I was in the market for one I would definitely be interested
The price is right add a paint job 15k drive it have fun
270HP. I’ll pass.
wMotor, that horsepower rating was measured at the rear end instead of the back of the crankshaft as in the 1970 engines. Still it was a lower compression motor but the horsepower was not as low as it sounds like, compared to the 1970 engines.
The 72 LS5 is a far cry from the 1970 LS5.
